The first station was opened on May 21, 1855 with the Utrecht – Rotterdam line. The route to The Hague was opened in 1870 and to Alphen aan den Rijn in 1934 . The former station building was damaged in the Second World War in 1944, which is why the station was rebuilt in 1948. The station was given its current appearance in 1984. From 2002 to 2009, trains similar to light rail ran on the line to Alphen. Sprinter trains in red and gray, the corporate identity of R-net , have been used there by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen since 2016 .
