The station Geldermalsen is a crossing station in Geldermalsen in the town of West Betuwe , located in the southwestern province of Gelderland is. It is located on the Utrecht – Boxtel and Elst – Dordrecht railway lines and is a central hub in inter-provincial rail passenger transport .

history

The new pedestrian bridge from 2011

Construction of the station building began in 1967 and was completed with the opening of the station on November 1, 1868. The opening took place at the same time as the Utrecht – Waardenburg section of the Utrecht – Boxtel railway line went into operation. The building designed by Karel Hendrik van Brederode was built on behalf of Staatsspoorwegen and comprised a risalit and two short wings of equal height. The connection to the Elst – Dordrecht railway took place on November 1, 1882. The first station building was closed again in 1884 and replaced in 1886 by a new building designed by the architect Marinus Antoine van Wadenoijen in the neo-renaissance style . The building, designed as an island train station , is surrounded on all sides by canopies. The middle part comprises two and a half stories, the asymmetrically built side wings are one and a half stories high. On October 20, 2003, the railway station was entered as a Rijksmonument in the register of the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed .

future

The Geldermalsen train station is to be expanded in the future. The measure has become necessary due to the increase in passenger traffic between the Amsterdam Centraal and Eindhoven Centraal stations . The railway infrastructure company ProRail is planning to create an additional, third lane for operation on the MerwedeLingelijn so that the trains no longer have to cross the tracks on the Utrecht – Boxtel line. In addition, the platforms are to be widened and the dispute over the pedestrian bridge, which has become too small, is to be resolved by building a new tunnel. To the north of the train station, three level crossings are also to be replaced by new underpasses that will be used by cars, pedestrians and cyclists. Construction work has been underway since 2019 and is expected to be completed by 2021. The project is part of the Programma Hoogfrequent Spoorvervoer , an initiative of the Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat , is expected to claim 146 million euros and is being developed by ProRail, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen and KNV .
