R-net or Randstadnet ( German  Randstad-Netz ) is a transport concept from authorities and transport companies in Randstad , a metropolitan area in the west of the Netherlands . The trains , subways , trams and buses used by various transport companies should create a high-quality public transport network ( Dutch hoogwaardig openbaar vervoer ) in the catchment area and be recognizable to travelers by their corporate identity .

history

R-net emerged from an initiative of the OV-bureau Randstad (German " ÖV -Büro Randstad"). The means of transport , designed in red and gray as a corporate identity, have been used in this form since 2011. At that time, the first buses in the region around Amsterdam were running in the red and gray color combination. The corporate identity is based on the color image of the bus routes running on the Zuidtangent in the Stadsregio Amsterdam . In 2013 the provinces of Flevoland, Noord-Holland, Utrecht, Zuid-Holland and the urban regions of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Haaglanden as well as Bestuur Regio Utrecht signed an agreement with the Ministry of Infrastructures and Waterstaat to develop the so-called "R-net". Until now, R-net consisted exclusively of bus routes that ran in the greater Amsterdam area and in the municipalities of Hilversum and Huizen . Since then, the network has been gradually expanded across Randstad, so that train, underground and tram lines are now also part of the R-net transport project. In 2019, the transport lines will be operated by the companies Arriva , Connexxion , EBS , GVB , HTM , Keolis , Nederlandse Spoorwegen , Qbuzz and RET .

future

A future concept drawn up by the authorities envisages an expansion of R-net to the entire Randstad area by 2028. It is planned that R-net buses will run in the region of the former Plusregio Haaglanden from 2019/2020. In 2020, two more bus connections and a new tram line are to be built. From Leiden Centraal train station , a bus line will go to the lighthouse in Katwijk , while another route will run to the European Space Research and Technology Center in Noordwijk . During rush hour , the bus stops should be frequented six times an hour. After the Sneltram line 51 was replaced by the new underground line 51 on March 3, 2019 , a new tram line, the Amsteltram , is to replace the Sneltram line 51 between Amsterdam Zuid station and Uithoorn .

criticism

R-net received criticism, among other things, for the cancellation of bus stops and the high costs of building bus lanes . The fact that the number of stops will be reduced has disadvantages above all for seniors, who depend on a dense network of stops and have to use shared taxis as an alternative .

Railway lines

In the province of Zuid-Holland, two railway lines are part of R-net: one line runs from Alphen aan den Rijn to Gouda , the other runs from Dordrecht to Geldermalsen . The former has been operated by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen with trains from Abellio since 2016 . The latter has been under Qbuzz's responsibility since December 2018, after it took over from Arriva.

Trains

The Nederlandse Spoorwegen purchased new trains in the red and gray colors for the “Gouda – Alphen aan den Rijn” concession.
