Siemens Avenio

Avenio of the T series in Munich

Avenio is the name of a low-floor - tram vehicle in modular design of Siemens Mobility . It was first presented as the “longest tram in the world” at the UITP 2009 trade fair in Vienna .

The Avenio M is to be distinguished from the Avenio . Under this type designation, Siemens markets its previously called Combino multi - articulated cars with aluminum car bodies.

technical structure

Constructive structure of a four-part short articulated trolley

The Avenio is a further development of the Combino family. The vehicles no longer have floating middle parts like the Combino multi-articulated trolleys , but are short-articulated trolleys with a chassis under each module. The car bodies are made of stainless steel instead of aluminum.

The vehicles of the Combino Plus series of the Budapest tram and the Sul do Tejo metro ( Almada , Portugal ) already correspond to the design of the Avenio. With a series of tests in Budapest, Siemens has proven that the trains there significantly reduce rail wear. In particular, the suspension of the floating middle parts of the multi-articulated wagons is a construction-related problem point that negatively influences the running properties and unnecessarily loads the car body structure.

Since 2014 Siemens markets its refined from Combino Classic Multi Gelenkwagen under the type designation Avenio M . These are to be differentiated from the short articulated trolley Avenio (without M ) in terms of the basic technical concept .

history

The forerunner Combino had to struggle with breakdowns in several cities due to a design error, as a result of which the vehicles had to be partially rebuilt. For Siemens, this meant, in addition to the financial damage, above all a high loss of image, which the new design should make up for with the new name "Avenio", among other things.

When the Avenio was presented in 2009, it was announced that it is expected to be built for the first time as an eight-part vehicle with a length of 72 meters for Tel Aviv . An order has not yet been placed because the consortium to build the tram has now lost its license.

The first order of the type came from The Hague . In November 2011 it was announced that HTM Personenvervoer , the operating company of the tram in The Hague , is ordering 40 four-part Avenios. The vehicles should be 35 m long and 2.55 m wide and offer 70 seats and 168 standing places. The order is worth over 100 million euros, including driver training and spare parts. An option for a further 40 pieces is possible. 20 pieces of this option were converted into a firm order in spring 2014. The vehicles were built in the Siemens plant in Vienna-Simmering, the chassis were manufactured in Graz . The last of the 60 trains was delivered in April 2016.

In July 2012 the Qatar Foundation ordered a turnkey tram system. In the capital of Qatar , Doha , 19 trams of the type Avenio were to run on a completely overhead line-free route from autumn 2015, on which the vehicles in the stops charge a combination of capacitors and batteries.

The Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) ordered eight vehicles for the Munich tram in September 2012 . On the night of October 28-29, 2013, the first vehicle was delivered to the MVG depot on Einsteinstrasse. By the end of 2013, delivery of the first six vehicles had been completed on schedule. The remaining two vehicles followed in the spring of 2014. From September 17, 2014, the first vehicles were in regular service on Line 19. This operation was discontinued at the end of July 2015 after the provisional operating license from the government of Upper Bavaria, which was only valid until then, failed had been extended. The vehicles received their final approval on September 30, 2015. In Munich the trams are called the T series.

In June 2017, Bremer Straßenbahn AG decided to procure 77 vehicles in a four-part, 37 m long and 2.65 m wide version and to agree on options for 7 additional vehicles. The wagons are to essentially replace the GT8N low-floor wagons from 2019. In January 2018, an option for a further 10 cars was exercised.

On July 4, 2019, MVG triggered the option to order 73 four-part vehicles, which are to be delivered from 2021.

On November 15, 2019, Siemens announced that 12 vehicles would be delivered to VAG Nuremberg . An option for 75 more vehicles was also agreed.

Trial in Graz

Avenio test deployment in Graz

The Graz Linien want to continuously expand their network. Since the vehicle reserves are already running out, Siemens sent a set to Graz in addition to Bombardier. From August 12, 2020 to August 24, 2020, Avenio 2501 MVG was tested in Graz.
