List of train stations in the Netherlands |
The station Alphen aan den Rijn is a separation station in the town of Alphen aan den Rijn , in the Netherlands province of South Holland is located. It is located on the Woerden – Leiden railway line , from which the Gouda – Alphen aan den Rijn railway branches off, and is an intercity stop.
history
The station was opened in 1878 after the construction of the line and the building by the Spoorweg-Maatschappij Leiden - Woerden . Due to severe subsidence, the building had to be demolished within a year, and the almost identical new building was opened on December 1, 1879.
In 1915 the station was connected with Uitgeest , but this line was closed and demolished in 1936. In 1932 the station was enlarged with the opening of the Gouda – Alphen aan den Rijn railway line. In 2004 the station was adapted with the construction of a new platform and the commissioning of track 4 for the S-Bahn-like trial operation of the RijnGouwelijn on the Gouda - Alphen aan den Rijn and Alphen aan den Rijn - Leiden lines. The platform is currently no longer in operation.
The train station is a little south of the center of the city. For a long time - until the Kerk en Zanen district was built - it was on the outskirts of the city.
New building
The municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn has been working on plans for the station area since 1998. Construction work began at the end of 2006. An important change is the construction of a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel under the tracks. The original station building from 1879 was demolished in 2007. In July and August 2008 the first part of the tunnel (track 1 and 2) was laid. In the summer of 2009, the tunnel was completed with the construction under tracks 3 and 4. The tunnel has been in use since March 20, 2010.

Gouda – Alphen aan den Rijn railway line
Shortly after the opening of the Gouda - Alphen aan den Rijn railway, only 10–15 trains per day ran between the two stations. After a few years the number was increased, and some trains also continued to Leiden Centraal . When the Woerden - Leiden line was electrified in 1950, these trains ended up in Alphen aan den Rijn again.
The trains to Gouda then ran every hour, supplemented by some trains in rush hour. The trains have been running every half hour since 1970, and from 1985 onwards, some trains continued to travel to Leiden during rush hour. After a few years the number of trains to Leiden increased. Between 2002 and 2009, the Stoptrein to Gouda was driven mainly with Swift A32 Lightrail vehicles. Then the connection was used again with normal NS vehicles. The line has been part of the R-net local transport concept since 2016 . The trains therefore run in red and gray colors, in contrast to the usual blue and white color choice of the NS.
Woerden – Leiden railway line
A pair of InterCity trains is currently running on the Leiden - Woerden route from Leiden CS to Utrecht CS every 30 minutes.
Bus station
The bus station was moved to the side of the car park on Havenstraat during construction. In the future, however, the bus station is to return to the station forecourt. Many of the bus routes that run here start and end at the train station.
