List of train stations in the Netherlands |
The Leiden Centraal railway station is the largest station in the Dutch city of Leiden . The station is used by 79,376 (2018) people daily, making it one of the most frequented in the Netherlands. National regional and long-distance trains run at the station. There is also a large bus station at the front of the station as a central hub for urban public transport and regional buses.
history
The first train station by the architect Frederik Willem Conrad was opened on August 17, 1842 with the Amsterdam – Rotterdam line. In 1879 the station was given a new main building by the architect DAN Margadant. The route to Woerden was opened in 1878 . In 1955, a new train station for Leiden was designed by HGJ Schelling. This post-war station was characterized by gray concrete, as in Arnhem , Hengelo and Zutphen . The main exit was by stairs. But the station was too small for the number of travelers. In addition, the traffic passed in front of the station. In 1981 the railway line to Schiphol Airport was opened. The international trains Thalys and Beneluxtrein also stopped at the station until the mid-1990s . The station did not get its name Leiden Centraal until 1997, when the residents asked for the title Centraal . In the Netherlands there are still six train stations with the addition Centraal , including Leiden .
Today's train station
The station building by architect Harry Reijnders is the fourth and was opened in 1996. It is built as a white truss construction. A white shell is characteristic of the entrance. At the opening, a large room was set up for ticket sales. With the advent of ticket machines in the station hall and the discontinuation of international ticket sales, the hall was largely unused. At the front of the station there is a large bus station where many lines are linked together. Next to the bus station there is a taxi bridge with a bicycle parking space underneath. All of this was realized because the Stationsplein tunnel was opened to road traffic in 1997. As a result, there was a lot more space at the front of the station and there is now a station square. On the lake side there is a monitored bicycle parking space for 2,000 bicycles.
