List of train stations in the Netherlands |
Rotterdam Centraal is the main train station of the Dutch port city of Rotterdam . It is a traffic junction of the Dutch railways and is therefore one of the most important train stations in the Netherlands with 96,690 (2018) passengers per day . National long-distance and local trains run here as well as the Benelux train to Brussels and the Thalys to Paris . The urban bus and tram lines ( Rotterdam tram ) and the urban metro also operate here . Furthermore, the light rail line to The Hague (Line E of the RandstadRail ) is connected to the station via the Rotterdam Metro , whereby the trains from The Hague continue to the Slinge underground station .
The station is connected to the international HSL-Zuid , which is part of the high-speed line Amsterdam - Antwerp (- Brussels - Paris ). Since a massive increase in passenger numbers to 323,000 is forecast by 2025, the station was virtually rebuilt, with the redesign of the station area based on designs by Benthem Crouwel Architects being a key project in Rotterdam's urban development.
history
Before the Second World War , Rotterdam did not have a central station. There were four smaller train stations in the city center: “Delftse Poort” (towards Schiedam and Dordrecht), “Beurs” (towards Dordrecht), “Maas” (towards Gouda and Utrecht) and “Hofplein” (towards The Hague and Scheveningen). From 1858 to 1953, trains from the direction of Utrecht ended at the “Maas” station. The "Delftse Poort" station was destroyed by a bombardment on May 14, 1940, and the other three stations were badly damaged. In 1957, the Centraal Station , designed by the architect van Ravesteyn, was built to the west of the former “Delftse Poort” station and was considered part of the reconstruction of Rotterdam.
