history

The next connection was the line to Winschoten - Nieuwe Schans (today: Bad Nieuweschans ) opened in 1868 . The connection to Meppel followed in 1870. A real station building was completed in 1872. In 1884 the line to Delfzijl was opened. The station was given its current appearance in 1896. In 1999 the station building was completely renovated and modernized.
future
As part of the Groningen Spoorzone project , profound measures will be taken at Groningen train station in the future. The clients, the municipality of Groningen, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen , ProRail and the province of Groningen are working together on the renovation of the station area. An underpass for buses is to be built below the tracks, which will lead to the new bus station south of the train station. A tunnel, which will run below the tracks, will enable pedestrians to access the platforms. In addition, a new bicycle station is to be built on the south side , which is to be connected to the Stadsbalkon bicycle station at the front of the train station via a newly built bicycle tunnel . Due to the increasing tourist traffic, the marshalling yard is to be relocated to Haren , which will provide space for an entrance and a forecourt on the south side. The completion of the project is planned for the year 2023.
