List of train stations in the Netherlands |
The Eemshaven station is a railway terminus and has the status of a breakpoint . It is located at the northern end of the port and industrial area of the same name at the mouth of the Ems in the Dutch province of Groningen and is the northernmost train station in the Netherlands.
history
The station was connected by extending a single-track railway line beyond Roodeschool. The new track for passenger traffic is 3 km, but 4.3 km of existing track for freight traffic could be integrated after adjustments. It was opened to traffic on March 28, 2018. The railway line and station were inaugurated on June 20, 2018 by King Willem-Alexander as part of a Dutch-German ceremony.
Integration into the existing route network and importance
In Roodeschool , a new through station for the Sauwerd – Roodeschool railway line was built in addition to the existing terminal station in the center of the village on the western edge of the village , and the old station was closed at the beginning of 2018 after the opening.
Eemshaven station is of economic importance primarily as a transition point for ferry traffic to Borkum , it is located opposite the terminal and landing stage of the shipping company AG Ems . The construction project was also promoted politically and financially by the German side, the costs amounted to 28.5 million euros.
While there are currently 1–8 pairs of trains every day to connect to the ferry service, every half-hourly service is planned on weekdays, as will be carried out to Roodeschool. A connection from Eemshaven to the Dutch intercity network is planned in order to offer similar accessibility to the ferry to Borkum as in Emden . The Eemshaven railway station is structurally designed for this.
