The Sauwerd – Roodeschool railway , also known as Hogelandspoor , was opened on August 16, 1893 as a connection between Sauwerd and Roodeschool station , the northernmost station in the Netherlands.

history

The memorial

The railway line was built by the Groningen Lokaalspoorwegmaatschappij as a branch of the Groningen – Delfzijl railway line . On May 3, 1978, an extension to Eemshaven was put into operation for freight traffic .

In 1973 the station buildings, especially the station buildings , in Winsum , Warffum , Usquert , Uithuizeermeeden and Roodeschool were demolished, and in 1975 in Sauwerd . Only the historic station building from 1891 in Baflo remained.

In the early morning of July 25, 1980, a serious accident occurred near Winsum . 9 people were killed and 21 injured. Two fully occupied trains collided.

On January 8, 2017, the new platform in Roodeschool was put into operation on the western outskirts for passenger traffic. The relocation was necessary in order to be able to continue the line to Eemshaven , as the old station was in the center of the village. The last passenger train stopped there on January 4th.

Passenger trains have been serving Eemshaven since March 28, 2018 . The official inauguration took place on June 20, 2018 by King Willem-Alexander . The operation of the trains on the railway line (Groningen–) Sauwerd – Eemshaven is carried out by the Dutch company Arriva .

Expansion of passenger traffic

In Eemshaven there is a connection to the Borkum ferry. For this, the existing freight connection for passenger had prepared, newly built 3 km distance and the railhead Roodeschool be replaced by a new station. All of this cost 25.8 million euros, most of which was provided by the European Union . The Netherlands took over a share of € 7.5 million.
