Sauwerd ( Gronings Saauwerd ) is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland in the Dutch province of Groningen .

history

The village was believed to be 500–300 BC. Chr. A Wierde built around that owes the village its name (probably. Sadewert of sod and Wierde). Today the place has about 1,100 inhabitants. Until the municipality reform in 1990 Sauwerd belonged to the former municipality of Adorp . The town hall of Adorp was also in Sauwerd. On the western outskirts of Sauwerd, the mighty Onstaborg , a castle-like property, stood in the Middle Ages , which was later replaced after destruction by a new building of the same name in the hamlet of Wetsinge 1,400 meters away. In 1800 the Onstaborg was sold "for demolition" (ie for demolition for the purpose of reusing the building material that was still usable).

church

Outline of the former Sauwerder Church

The results of archaeological excavations in 1982 showed that a first church building already consisted of a hall church with an attached, narrowed choir at the end of the 12th century . In the middle of the 13th century this church was demolished and a similarly large Romano-Gothic church, still without a choir, was built. In the 14th or 15th century, a late Gothic, three-sided choir, supported by pillars, was added. In 1840 the church building, together with the church in neighboring Wetsinge, was demolished due to its disrepair. Both villages received a common new church, which found its place between the two places.

In 1859 a church of the Christelijke Afgescheiden Gemeenten was built. After the merger with the Low German Reformed Church in 1897 to form the reformeerde Kerk , it was replaced in 1889 by today's Reformed Church. In 1945 a split resulted in the reformeerde Kerk, whose members used to gather in a garage until 1950. Only then was it possible to move into a church (Kromme Elleboog 3). In 1983, this building was exchanged for a care center converted into a church (Oude Winsumerstraatweg 7). The old church was converted into a residential building. Public transportation

Railway accident near Sauwerd (1980)

Sauwerd is on the Groningen - Delfzijl and Sauwerd - Roodeschool railway lines . These railway lines share near the village. In 2003, a second lane was built between Groningen Noord station and Sauwerd station. This section was previously one of the busiest single-track routes in the Netherlands.

A former station building was demolished in 1975. Today's station consists only of a bus shelter, ticket machine and benches.

On July 25, 1980, two passenger trains ran into each other south of the Winsum town limits. The approaching train had left Sauwerd shortly before. This accident killed nine people and injured 21 people. A human communication error is assumed to be the cause.

Two bus routes go through Sauwerd.
