Het Hogeland ( Gronings ' t Hoogelaand ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Groningen . It emerged on January 1, 2019 from the municipalities of Bedum , Eemsmond , De Marne and Winsum (apart from the villages of Ezinge, Feerwerd and Garnwerd, which became part of Westerkwartier ).

Het Hogeland, which at around 908 km² is the largest municipality in the Netherlands in terms of area, is located in the northeast of the Netherlands. The municipality is surrounded in the north by the North Sea , in the east by the Ems and in the west by the province of Friesland . Het Hogeland is located in the Hogeland , from where the municipality got its name. It extends at a height between -4 and 2 m NAP .

Municipal council
The first local election in the history of the municipality took place on November 21, 2018. In addition to the governing parties CDA , ChristenUnie , D66 and VVD , the opposition parties GroenLinks , PvdA and SP as well as the local parties GemeenteBelangen Het Hogeland and Hogeland Lokaal Centraal were available for election. The new municipal council has space for 29 councilors, who are to be used by the various parliamentary groups as follows:

The mayors of the four municipalities remained in office until January 1, 2019. Since then, Henk Jan Bolding took over the office of mayor of the municipality of Het Hogeland provisionally. His official appointment took place on January 29, 2020.
Parish seat
The municipal administration as well as the college are located in Winsum, while the municipal council takes its place in the council chamber in Uithuizen.
