Eemsmond ( ), called Hefshuizen until 1992 , was a municipality on the wadden coast of the Dutch province of Groningen . 15,420 inhabitants (as of September 30, 2018) lived in the municipality on 543.35 km² (of which 354.04 km² are water). The name of the municipality came from the confluence of the Ems in the North Sea . On January 1, 2019, the municipality merged with Bedum , De Marne and Winsum . The name of the new municipality is Het Hogeland .

Location and economy
location
The municipality is located in the far northeast of the Netherlands and therefore borders the Wadden Sea . On the coast are the large Eemshaven , which is still being expanded, and the smaller Noordpolderzijl fishing port, north of Warffum and Usquert.
Neighboring communities are Delfzijl , Loppersum and Winsum .
traffic
From Eemshaven there is a direct ferry connection to the German North Sea island of Borkum . Eemshaven used to be a departure point for ships that went on the “ butter trip ” for the popular duty-free shopping .
A railway line runs from the provincial capital Groningen to Roodeschool, the northernmost passenger station in the Netherlands (for other stops see above). For freight traffic, the railway continues to connect the Eemshaven. The Nationalstraat 46 (no motorway ) Groningen - Eemshaven passes Roodeschool on a dam.

More and more companies are settling in the Eemshaven area (see Eemshaven ). Agriculture , small businesses and tourism are important economic factors.

Due to the merger on January 1, 2019, the elections for the council of the new municipality of Het Hogeland took place on November 21, 2018.

Marijke van Beek ( PvdA ) was the incumbent mayor of the municipality from November 16, 2007 until the municipality was dissolved . Her colleagues included Harald Bouman (Gemeentebelangen Eemsmond), Sandra Herkströter ( SP ), Harrie Sienot ( CDA ), Theo Berends ( ChristenUnie ) and the community secretary Betto Meijer.

History, name explanations
In this area, where the struggle between man and water has always played a major role, the first settlements (including Warffum and Usquert) on “wierden” (German: Terps ) arose at the beginning of our era . These are heights thrown up by human hands, where farms and later churches and small villages emerged. In the 10th century , dykes began to be built along the Wadden Sea coast, which continued to move northwards . This is how Uithuizen (= the houses facing the outside) and later Uithuizermeeden (= the meadows near Uithuizen; “meeden, maden, maten” are East Dutch dialect words for “meadow where you mow hay”; compare -matt in: Zermatt ). In Usquert there was important fishing in the Middle Ages ; the name can be explained as "Fischwarft".
In the 18th century a ship was stranded in the mudflats. The area was polded and the old ship converted into a hostel. This is how the hamlet of Oudeschip came into being .
There are villa-like farmhouses from the 19th century in the whole community , because the farmers who grew all kinds of grain at the time could charge high prices and often became very rich. The village of Roodeschool was built around a red school building from 1830 .
The place name Doodstil is strange. The Dutch word "doodstil" means: "dead quiet", extremely calm. The hamlet is also very quiet. The name means: "til" (= small bridge) from Doede. A man with this first name had a farm a long time ago, around which the place developed. The small bridge that can be opened by hand still exists. This place name was voted the “most beautiful place name” in the Dutch-speaking area in a survey by the Dutch and Dutch- speaking Belgian population in 2005 .
Attractions
- In the village of Warffum there are some picturesque houses, a corner shop and a café from the period 1780–1915. These houses now form the open-air museum Openluchtmuseum Het Hoogeland . An outbuilding of this museum is in Uithuizermeeden.
- The international folklore and folk dance festival “Op Roakeldais” also takes place in Warffum every summer .
- Like the neighboring parishes, Eemsmond is rich in small medieval churches. Some have organs that are well worth seeing , the church of Uithuizen even one by the famous organ builder Arp Schnitger .
- The small port of Noordpolderzijl on the Wadden Sea coast is also open to tourists and their ships.
- Uithuizen has a small castle called Menkemaborg (Borg = country seat, of the Menkema family) as well as Uithuizermeeden, namely the Rensumaborg. A tour shows the interesting interior of the building. The gardens and parks can also be visited.
- Usquert's former town hall (now an office building) was designed by the well-known architect HP Berlage .
