De Marne was a municipality in the Netherlands , province of Groningen . It had 10,006 inhabitants (as of September 30, 2018), spread over 21 small villages. The most important of these were Eenrum, Kloosterburen , Lauwersoog , Leens , Pieterburen , Ulrum , Wehe-den Hoorn and Zoutkamp . On January 1, 2019, the community merged with Bedum , Winsum and Eemsmond . The name of the new municipality is Het Hogeland .

Name and location

The municipality was created in 1990 due to the amalgamation of the former municipalities Eenrum, Kloosterburen, Leens and Ulrum. It was called at the time of their merger after one of its largest places Ulrum , but later changed the name two years in the country part Marne of the former Frisian Gaus Hunsingo on which most of the municipality extends.

The place Marnehuizen near Lauwersoog is considered an “unofficial 22nd village” . It has no residents and serves as a military training area ( house warfare ) for the Dutch Army (see also military training area ). It is the largest of its kind in Europe.

Attractions

Sights in the community include the seal rearing station in Pieterburen and the mudflat hiking center, Borg Verhildersum in Leens, Abraham's mustard museum in Eenrum and a variety of churches, towers, farmsteads, sausages and listed villages. The approximately 9,000 hectare area around the Lauwerssee was created in 1969 after it was dammed from the sea and is used by anglers, ornithologists, hikers, cyclists and water sports enthusiasts.
