Location and economy

The municipality is only about 10 kilometers north of the provincial capital Groningen and about 35 kilometers west of the German border. In the 1970s, the municipality of Groningen annexed a few square kilometers at Bedum's expense. There Groningen built the Beijum district.

White cabbage for sauerkraut has been grown in the municipality since ancient times . This plant is called in the regional dialect: "Boeskool". Therefore a statue of a white cabbage farmer ("boeskoolboer") was erected in Zuidwolde.

Bedum has a small train station on the Groningen - Delfzijl railway line .
