Warfhuizen ( Gronings Waarfhoezen ) is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland in the north of the Netherlands , in the province of Groningen .
Warfhuizen lies on two terps . The church and the village center are on the larger one. The smaller terp is called "Burum". Warfhuizen used to be a larger village with shops and restaurants, but after the rural exodus since the beginning of the 20th century, the village only has 170 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2017).
history
Warfhuizen used to have two castles, of which the Gaykingaburg, built around 1280, was the older and was damaged in the Eighty Years' War . The Gaykingaburg fell into disrepair from 1717. A farm was built on their remains in 1789.
The role of the Gaykingaburg as the castle of Warfhuizen was taken over by the Lulemaburg. It was first mentioned in 1654 and has been owned by different owners over the years.
Even after Groningen was re-annexed to the Netherlands, Warfhuizen's inhabitants remained devout Catholics. The Junker Titus van Ewsum was even accused of tearing a page from his servant's Heidelberg catechism . On this page, the Catholic Holy Mass was referred to as cursed idolatry. Titus escaped death only by paying a heavy fine.
In De Hoorn, which was part of the Warfhuizen parish for the longest time, there was a so-called Schuilkerk ( hidden church ) from the end of the 17th century .
Marian devotion
The church of the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Closed Garden ( Onze Lieve Vrouwe van de Besloten Tuin ) in the village is one of the northernmost Marian shrines in Europe. The history of the veneration of Mary began with the return of the village church to the Catholics and the establishment of a hermitage . The church has an unusually southern atmosphere and furnishings for the Netherlands. It is visited by many pilgrims, especially parents who are concerned about their children.
Water and nature
To the east of Warfhuizen lies the “Kromme Rake” area, which, with its course, is a part of small watercourses, which is known in North Groningen as “Het Marengebied”. These small watercourses are very popular with tourists because they offer the opportunity for boat tours.
