Kloosterburen ( Gronings Kloosterboeren ) is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland in the Dutch province of Groningen . The place has a total of 750 inhabitants.

The name refers to the two monasteries that used to stand here. The Oldeklooster (founded around 1175) and the Nijenklooster (1204), which both belonged to the Premonstratensian order .

The history of the monastery

The older monastery was close by and was probably founded in 1175 as a branch of the Mariëngaarde monastery ( Hallum , Friesland province ). It was dedicated to Saint John . In 1204 the connection to the Premonstratensians followed, the monastery inmates moved into a new monastery, the newly built Nijenklooster (New Monastery) outside the dike, in the former mouth of the Hunze . Both monasteries are said to have had 240 residents together in 1290. The Oldeklooster included 600 hectares of Schorrenland and, along with other lands, a third of the now uninhabited island of Rottumeroog . In Groningen the monastery also had a building in the Turftorenstraat (corner of Uurwerkersgang ), which was used until 1607. Large parts to the west of the neighboring village of Eenrum belonged to the Nijenklooster . With the surrender of the Catholic Groningen in 1594 and the "return to the republic" (" Reductie van Groningen "), the monasteries were dissolved in the following years. The only thing that remained was the monastery church of the Oldekloster, which was used by the Protestants and was rebuilt in the 17th century. This church was demolished in 1815 except for the tower and replaced by the Nicolaaskerk .

Kloosterburen is today (again) Catholic and thus one of the few Roman Catholic enclaves in the Hogeland . In 1842 a simple catholic hall church ( Waterstaatskirche ) was built, which was replaced in 1868 by the catholic Sint-Willibrorduskerk , a neo-Gothic building by Pierre Cuypers . (for naming see Willibrord )

Church reshuffles in 1990 and 2019

Before 1990 Kloosterburen was the capital of the eponymous municipality of Kloosterburen, which, in addition to the village center, consisted of the homesteads and hamlets Hornhuizen , Kleine Huisjes , Kruisweg , Molenrij , Nijenklooster and Westerklooster . In 1990 the town and municipality merged with the municipalities of Eenrum , Leens and Ulrum into the greater municipality of Ulrum, later renamed De Marne. On January 1, 2019, this merged with Bedum , Eemsmond and Winsum to form the new municipality of Het Hogeland .

particularities

  • Kloosterburen owns the northernmost carnival association in the Netherlands ("cv Oldeclooster", founded in 1970). During the foolish times, Kloosterburen is renamed Crown Body .
  • In 1990, the television station NCRV produced a six-part documentary about Kloosterburen called De ontdekking van Kloosterburen (The Discovery of Kloosterburen). She described how the village is preparing for the coming millennium.
  • While the regional broadcaster RTV Noord was looking for the Leukste dorp van Groningen (Most Beautiful Village in the Province of Groningen), Kloosterburen was highlighted several times for its - in relation to its small population - unusually large number of leisure and club activities.
