Dirk Lohman (* July 14, 1730 ; † July 4, 1814 in Groningen ) was an East Frisian organ builder in Emden , who carried out repairs on numerous organs in East Frisia and built an important new building in Hage (1776–1783).

Life

Dirk Lohman was born the son of Nicolaus Lohman, a carpenter in Neufunnixsiel . He learned carpentry and organ building and probably apprenticed to the related organ builder Cornelius Geerds Wallies from Leer . At first he worked with Wallies. In 1754 he moved to Emden, married Reenste Gerdes Greving and ran his own organ workshop from there. From 1786 he was also active in the province of Groningen and moved to Groningen in 1788, where he died in 1814. His family business continued in Groningen well into the 19th century. His son Nicolaus Anthony Lohman (1766-1835) learned organ building from his father and in 1801 took over the management of the business. His brother Gerhard Diederich (1764–1823) also worked in his father's workshop until this year. In the third generation, the grandson Diederik Hendrik Lohmnn (1797–1856) continued the family business. Other sons of Nicolaus Anthony were Hinderk Berends (1799-1854) and Gerhard Willem (1802-1856), who also worked in the workshop. Nicolaas Anthonie Gerhardus Lohman (1834–1871), son of Hinderk Berends, initially took over the company in the fourth generation, but in 1863 bought the workshop of Herman Eberhard Freytag (1796–1869).

Wallies began building a small organ in the French Reformed Church in Emden in 1755. After Wallies's death, it was completed by Lohman in 1756. Lohman Wallies' organ remodeling in the Gasthauskirche in Emden was also completed in 1758. Until 1788 he was almost exclusively engaged in repairs in the East Frisian region. Only in Hage was he commissioned with a new building and initially worked for a day's wage , from 1782 for a fixed price per register. Lohman took over most of the pipe inventory in the main work from the previous organ of the 17th century from an unknown organ builder. He also carried out repairs and conversions in the Netherlands, usually with the help of his sons.

List of works

The size of the instruments is indicated in the fifth column by the number of manuals and the number of sounding registers in the sixth column. A capital “P” stands for an independent pedal , a lowercase “p” for an attached pedal.
