Reformed Church in Visquard

The Evangelical Reformed Visquard Church is in the East Frisian town of Visquard , in the Krummhörn . A special feature of the church is the Count's East Frisian and Swedish coats of arms, which are built in stone and represent the fraternization of the two houses.

History and description of the building

Bell tower of the Visquard Church

The terp village Visquard was created in the 8th century as a fishing village on the edge of the Sielmönker Bay . In the years between 1250 and 1275, the residents built today's church as a rectangular one-room out of bricks and consecrated it to Saint Margaret . The original arched portals from the Romanesque period on the long sides of the hall church are now walled up.

After the Reformation, the church was extensively rebuilt. From the originally existing rood screen between the choir and the nave, the beams were preserved, on which a gallery with an organ was later installed. The two old portals on the south and north sides were walled up and replaced by a west portal in 1598, which has served as the entrance to the church ever since. While the hagioscope, which subsequently broke into the south wall, is open, the one opposite was walled up flush at some point. At the time of its construction, the sacred building had four vaults. These threatened to collapse due to changes in the dike and a drop in the groundwater level at the end of the 18th century and were replaced by a wooden barrel ceiling. Only the choir yoke remained. It is spanned by an eight-part vault, the underlying bulge ribs converge in a star. There is a depiction of Christ in the keystone. Originally the choir had a pair of coupled arched windows in the north, east and south. Today there is a group of three pointed arched windows in the east, while the walled-up windows along the entire south side are intersected by large new round-arched windows.

The closed-type free-standing bell tower next to the church was probably built around 1300. The bells were cast in 1798 and 1958.

After the Reformation, the altar panel was reworked into a trapezoidal grave panel. This is now set up on the east wall.

The pulpit was created in 1729 by an Emden coffin carpenter.

The sandstone clock above the west entrance was restored in 2002. It was donated by the East Frisian Count Edzard II and his wife Katharina Wasa , whose coat of arms is shown on the timepiece.

The organ gallery is on the beams of the former rood screen .

organ

Organ prospectus before 1680

The organ is the work of an unknown master from the time before 1680. The prospectus and the double doors with the painted organ pipes, which make the work appear larger, are still preserved from this instrument . The Rohlfing brothers exchanged the interior work in 1884/85, which was replaced again in 1966 by the Dutch organ building company Johann Reil . The instrument has eight registers on a manual and attached pedal .
