history

Most of the villages in this municipality are on "wierden" ( terps ). The first inhabitants (fishermen and farmers) were safe from the waters of the foothills of the Wadden Sea on these escape hills, mostly raised by human hands . These terps were built between 500 BC. And the Middle Ages. Some were later excavated; on the one hand, because the soil inside a terp is very fertile due to the presence of human, animal and vegetable waste; on the other hand, because treasure hunters and serious archaeologists looked for valuable old objects in them.

"Borg" Ten Ham, excerpt from the "Borgenkaart / Coenderskaart" Groningen, 1678

The manor house ("Borg") Ten Ham (Den Ham), also called Duirsum, was located near Loppersum. Towards the end of the 15th century it was owned by the Heemstra family. The heiress Bawine married Roelof van Munster, lord of ruins and 1505–1512 Drost of the province of Drenthe . Their son Roelof van Münster (approx. 1500–1558), Herr zu Herzford , lived in Ten Ham with his wife Maria van Selbach (approx. 1510–1576). Their son-in-law Johan de Mepsche (approx. 1520–1585), vice governor of the province of Groningen, converted Ten Ham into a castle which, according to contemporary witnesses, "had no equal in the country of Groningen". Ten Ham was demolished in the 18th century. Several tombstones from the heyday are preserved in the impressive Loppersum Petrus and Pauluskirche.

Loppersum has developed into the municipality's shopping and administrative center since the late 19th century because of its location by the railway and the main road .

Location and economy

The municipality is located northeast of the city of Groningen , on the Groningen – Delfzijl railway line and the trunk road to Delfzijl . The villages of Stedum and Loppersum have small train stations (30-minute service). The municipal administration is located in Loppersum.

Agriculture and the related small businesses determine the economic life in the municipality.

Natural gas production and consequences

Loppersum is located on Europe's largest natural gas reservoir. The gas has been produced by the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) since the 1960s. Since the first earthquake in the area of the Groningen gas field was registered near Assen in December 1986 , more than a thousand more have occurred , but most of them only reached a maximum strength of 2.0. However, since the vibrations occur at a shallow depth of no more than 3000 meters, they are more noticeable. At the end of 1988 the Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologische Instituut (KNMI) set up seismological monitoring of the area, which soon provided evidence of a connection between gas production and the increase in earthquakes. On August 16, 2012, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake struck Huizinge. This resulted in visible damage to buildings. As a threat to the population was now also to be feared, the Dutch government arranged for the NAM to cut gas production, pay for any damage and ensure more safety with the help of an investigation program.

On January 8, 2018, an earthquake in the Zeerijp district reached a magnitude of 3.4. It was also felt in the provincial capital of Groningen, around 25 kilometers away . An earthquake of the same strength occurred on May 22, 2019 in the Westerwijtwerd district.
