Midden-Groningen is a municipality in the Dutch province of Groningen . It was created on January 1, 2018 through the merger of the previous municipalities of Hoogezand-Sappemeer , Menterwolde and Slochteren . The community has 60,982 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019).

The community consists of the following districts
- Foxham, Foxhol, Froombosch, Harkstede, Hellum, Hoogezand , Kiel-Windeweer, Kolham, Kropswolde, Martenshoek, Meeden, Muntendam , Noordbroek, Overschild, Sappemeer , Scharmer, Schildwolde, Siddeburen, Slochteren , Steendam, Tjiderbroek, Water.
Neighboring communities
The neighboring municipalities are Haren , Groningen , Loppersum , Appingedam , Delfzijl , Oldambt , Pekela and Veendam (all in the province of Groningen) and Gieten and Zuidlaren (both in the province of Drenthe ).
history
Hoogezand-Sappemeer The municipality of Hoogezand-Sappemeer was created on April 1, 1949 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Hoogezand and Sappemeer. Windeweer had been part of Hoogezand since August 1, 1821.
Menterwolde The municipality of Menterwolde only had this name since February 1, 1991.
The municipality of Oosterbroek was created on July 1, 1965 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Noordbroek and Zuidbroek. On January 1, 1990, Meeden and Muntendam were added. The name was changed to Menterwolde about a year later.
Slochteren Harkstede (since August 1, 1821) and Siddeburen (since January 1, 1826) belonged to the municipality of Slochteren.
New municipality The new municipality was created on January 1, 2018 as part of the territorial reforms in the Netherlands, in which the number of municipalities is significantly reduced over a longer period of time. With 48 percent of the vote, the residents chose the name themselves. The municipal councils of the three merged municipalities approved the naming on April 26, 2016.

Adriaan Hoogendoorn ( ChristenUnie ) has been mayor of the municipality of Midden-Groningen since July 9, 2018 . Rein Munniksma ( PvdA ) had previously taken over the post on January 1, 2018.

traffic
There is a rail connection to the provincial capital Groningen and to Bad Nieuweschans and Weener via the Leer – Groningen line . The continuation is currently interrupted due to the defective Friesenbrücke bridge.
The Rijkswege A 7 and N 33 cross at the Zuidbroek motorway junction .
