Attractions

Zuidlaren is popular with tourists for its various cultural sights and attractions.

There are various statues in the center of the village. The statue of a horse and two horse dealers was unveiled by Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands during the 800th anniversary of the Zuidlaardermarkt in 2000 . There is also the statue of Berend Botje , which is supposed to remember Login Petrovich Heiden (1773-1850). Van Heiden was a Russian admiral of Dutch descent. In the Netherlands, Berend Botje is also known and popular as a song for preschool children.

The WWII memorial is located opposite the former Laarwoud Town Hall . The annual commemoration of the residents who perished in World War II is always on May 4th , the day before Liberation Day . Today, however, commemoration is no longer limited to the Second World War, but also includes the current conflicts.

In Zuidlaren there is also a mill known as Das Wachter which is located to the east of the village. The mill specializes in grain and oil and operates its own bakery . Those interested can visit the mill, which is now a museum .

The architecturally most important building in Zuidlaren is the Noorder Sanatorium . The large, late Art Deco building was built in the early 1930s as a separate extension to the Dennenoord Psychiatric Clinic and opened in 1935. The design comes from the Groningen architect Egbert Reitsma (1892–1976). The building is considered to be the highlight of his work. The garden with the large pond was designed by the landscape architect Jan Vroom jr. (1893–1958) designed. Hospital operations in the Noorder Sanatorium were given up in 1975. The building has been used by a private research institute since 1988.

Events

The most important event in Zuidlaren is the Zuidlaardermarkt . It is an annual event with a large cattle market and a fair with many attractions. In addition to the annual Zuidlaardermarkt, there are also other markets, such as the Friday market and the Oud-Drentsche market , which are always held on Wednesdays in summer. Another major event related to horses was NIC until 2008 .
