History and name
Drenthe, owned by the Bishop of Utrecht in the Middle Ages , was divided into six thing games (jurisdictions) in 1412. These consisted of a few "kerspels" ( parishes ): parishes.
The old parishes of Eelde, Vries and Zuidlaren were already inhabited in the Neolithic Age. The bog body of a young woman who belongs to the collection of the Drents Museum in Assen was found near Yde .
In the Middle Ages, Zuidlaren was given the right to hold an annual horse market, which is still there.
On May 23, 1977, a dramatic hostage-taking took place near De Punt in a train captured by South Moluccan terrorists . This was forcibly ended three weeks later, on June 11th, by the intervention of a special command of the Mariniers Corps . Six of the southern Moluccas and two passengers were killed.
In the middle of the municipality is the village of Tynaarlo. Its name means something like : to the Aa-Loh , or: to the Aar-Loh , that is: to the forest by the water, or to the eagle forest.
