economy
traffic
The city is a transport hub in the southwest of the province. From here there are connections to Arnhem , Groningen and Leeuwarden . The motorways to Groningen and Leeuwarden separate here. The Meppel Station is located on the Arnhem-Leeuwarden railway , from which the railway line Meppel-Groningen branches. This also applies to inland shipping. The Meppelerdiep , the Drentsche Hoofdvaart and the Hoogeveense Vaart in the direction of Zwartewaterland , Assen and Hoogeveen begin here . The Meppelerdiep is suitable for ships up to 2,000 tons.
Industry
The place flourished from around 1600 due to peat mining in Drenthe and the associated shipping and has since remained a not insignificant market town.
Today Meppel is a regional center with many smaller industrial and trading companies. There is also a large printing shop. The livestock and agriculture are also of great importance.
