  • de Wijk: The place was first mentioned in 1176; There are two “havezaten” (mansions) in the village: Dunninge and Dickninge, which had housed a Benedictine monastery from 1325 to around the Reformation in the 16th century .
  • Echten: The place was first mentioned in a document in 1181; the name comes from either "real" - that is a higher Mr impaired yard - or "real" (= night ), because in the 12th century a disobedient Squire to have been banished here as a punishment. A noble family then settled here, called themselves Van Echten and did a lot of good for their subjects in the village for centuries.
  • Koekange: The name comes from Koe-gang, Kuh-Weidegang, meadow. The settlement, first mentioned in 1141, is a "veenkolonie", a colony of peat cutters and their masters from the province of Groningen.
