Staphorst ( listen ? / I ) is a municipality in the Netherlands , province of Overijssel . It has a total area of about 136 km² and has 17,006 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019). Audio file / audio sample

The municipality consists of the villages of Staphorst as the seat of the municipal administration, Rouveen, IJhorst, and the village of Punthorst.

Location and economy

Staphorst is located in a moorland 6 km south of Meppel and 20 km north of Zwolle , on the A 28 Zwolle-Meppel - Groningen / Leeuwarden motorway . The railway line between these cities also runs through the municipality, but Staphorst does not have a train station.

The parish is rich in dairy farms. There is some metal, woodworking, and plastics industries. The east of the community near IJhorst is sandy and densely wooded, where tourism is important.

History and character

The villages emerged in the 13th century when farmers settled in order to reclaim the moor and to extract peat. The elongated staphorst, which merges imperceptibly into Rouveen towards the south, has been completely demolished several times over the centuries, including its village street (which was part of the ancient Zwolle - Groningen trade route) and rebuilt a little further.

The village consists of characteristic farms, some of them painted green, mostly from the years 1800 to 1920, on narrow, kilometer-long plots. Most of the residents of this community belong to Orthodox Calvinist churches. As in the fishing village of Spakenburg , older women in particular still wear traditional costumes on Sundays . Visitors are not allowed to take photographs on these days.

A museum farm was set up in the center to give the visitor an insight into life in this village.

The place is in the northern area of the so-called Dutch " Bible Belt ", where Orthodox Calvinism is strongly represented. In 1971 there was a small local poliomyelitis outbreak in Staphorst with 39 sick people and 5 deaths. Some survivors were left with permanent paralysis. Many Orthodox Calvinists did not have their children vaccinated because of religious concerns. Even today, around 20% of the population is still unvaccinated, which is why the World Health Organization is considered a danger zone.

Sports

The most famous club in the community is the “ Sport Vereniging Staphorst ”. Their first football team was promoted to the Hoofd class for the first time in 2009 , the highest Dutch amateur league at the time, and can therefore call themselves “third division”. The club colors are blue and yellow, analogous to those of the community.
