Borne ( Lower Saxon : Boorn ) is a municipality in the province of Overijssel in the Netherlands . It has 23,236 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019, predominantly Catholic or religious). The municipality includes the main town Borne and the small villages Hertme and Zenderen. Bornerbroek has been part of the neighboring town of Almelo since 2001 .

Location and economy

Borne is located in the Twente region on the cross-border Almelo – Salzbergen railway . The A1 motorway Amsterdam - Hengelo - Osnabrück - Berlin runs alongside the town. A partnership with the German city of Rheine has existed since 1983 . Borne has some industry, mostly small businesses. Many residents commute to work in the neighboring cities every day. The scenic surroundings as well as the church and some houses from the 18th century attract tourists, especially for bike tours.

history

Borne was first mentioned in documents in 1206 and was called "Burgundy" in the Middle Ages . It was a poor farming village in Lower Saxony in the Netherlands until Salomon J. Spanjaard founded one of the region's many textile factories here in 1828 . Especially towels from the Spanjaard brand were known nationwide. Almost all of the men from Borne worked at Spanjaard in the 1920s. The company, which during the Second World War had to work temporarily under a Nazi administrator as a "Jewish company", was no longer able to cope with the Asian competition and in 1973 had to cease operations.
