Netherlands

Weghorst came through the clubs RKSV NEO and DETO Twenterand from his home province of Overijssel to the youth of Willem II Tilburg . From 2012 he played for two seasons in the second-class Eerste Divisie at FC Emmen and moved to the first division for Heracles Almelo for the 2014/15 season . He made his Eredivisie debut on August 9, 2014 in the game against his future club AZ Alkmaar after being substituted on in the 69th minute.

For the 2016/17 season he moved to AZ Alkmaar and signed a contract that ran until 2020. On November 24, 2016 Weghorst scored his first goal in a European competition against Dundalk FC in the group stage of the 2016/17 Europa League .

Germany

For the season 2018/19 changed Weghorst first time abroad. He signed a contract with German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg that was valid until June 30, 2022 . He scored his first Bundesliga goal for Wolfsburg in the 3-1 away win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on September 1, 2018, the second matchday of that season. He played all 34 league games and was Wolfsburg's top scorer with 17 goals this season. With VfL, the Dutchman finished the season in 6th place, which meant qualifying for the group stage of the Europa League , and then received a contract extension until June 2023.

A year later, the Dutchman had only missed three of 45 competitive games and was not in the starting line-up in only one. 20 goals in all competitions as well as five assists once again made his importance for the club clear - the top scorers after him were Josip Brekalo with seven and Renato Steffen with six goals. In addition, the striker caught ten yellow cards, which was due, among other things, to his aggressive style of play. While you finished seventh in the Bundesliga and couldn't qualify directly for the Europa League, you were in the round of 16 this season. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , all European Cup competitions were initially not resumed in favor of league operations. The second leg of the second round on August 5, 2020 was lost 3-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk . Weghorst and his team were eliminated.

National team

Weghorst has been playing for the Dutch senior team since the beginning of 2018 . He made his debut on March 23, 2018 in a friendly against England when he came on for Stefan de Vrij in the 89th minute .

Personal

Weghorst has three brothers, none of whom are athletes. Up to the age of 23 he first studied business administration and then journalism .
