Renato Steffen (born November 3, 1991 in Aarau ) is a Swiss football player . He is under contract with VfL Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga .
Career
society
Renato Steffen spent his junior years at FC Erlinsbach and FC Aarau . After playing at SC Schöftland and FC Solothurn , he moved to FC Thun in the summer of 2012 , for whom he made his Super League debut on September 2, 2012 in the game against Servette FC Genève . In 2013 he moved to BSC Young Boys , for whom he played until the end of 2015.
On January 12, 2016, he moved to FC Basel . He signed a four and a half year contract. He scored his first goal for FC Basel on February 2, 2016 in a friendly against Neuchâtel Xamax . He played his first competitive game for FC Basel on February 7, 2016, when he came on for Matias Delgado in the 75th minute and scored the goal to make it 3-0. Under coach Urs Fischer , Steffen won the championship title with FCB at the end of the 2015/16 championship and the 2016/17 championship . For the club it was the 8th title in a row and the 20th title in the club's history. They also won the cup competition on May 25, 2017 with three to zero against Sion and thus the double .
For the second half of the 2017/18 season , Steffen moved to VfL Wolfsburg . On January 10, 2018, he signed a contract with Wolves until 2021. He made his Bundesliga debut on January 14, 2018 (18th matchday) in a goalless draw in the away game against Borussia Dortmund with a substitute for Daniel Didavi in the 64th minute. He scored his first Bundesliga goal for Wolfsburg on September 1, 2018, the second match day of the following 2018/19 season, in an away win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen to make it 3-1.
National team
Steffen made his debut for the Swiss national football team on October 9, 2015 in a 7-0 European qualifying home game for the 2016 European Championships against San Marino , having never been a junior national player before. Steffen missed the 2016 European Championship injured, and he was not called up for the 2018 World Championship .
