Melingo Kevin Mbabu (born April 19, 1995 in Chêne-Bougeries ) is a Swiss football player . He is under contract with VfL Wolfsburg .
Career
In the club
Beginnings and transfer to the island
Mbabu comes from the youth of Servette FC . In the 2012/13 season he made his debut on September 26, 2012 under Sébastien Fournier as a substitute against FC Lausanne-Sport in the Super League , although he was still part of the A-youth at that time . Shortly before that, he had already played once in the U21 in the fifth-class 2nd league interregionally .
On January 31, 2013 Mbabu moved to the English first division club Newcastle United . There he was initially in the U21 squad, where he made seven appearances by the end of the 2012/13 season; another ten games followed in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons.
In February 2015 Mbabu moved to the end of the 2014/15 season to Scottish first division club Glasgow Rangers , where he was not used.
For the 2015/16 season Mbabu returned to Newcastle United, and got three appearances in the Premier League and one each in the FA Cup and League Cup under coach Steve McClaren . Under Rafael Benítez , who took over the squad in March 2016, he did not play in the professional team. He also made four appearances in the U21 team during that season.
Return to Switzerland
On August 23, 2016 Mbabu returned to Switzerland and initially switched to BSC Young Boys on loan until the end of the 2016/17 season . Under coach Adi Hütter , he was used in 21 league games and scored one goal. He also played three games in the U21 in the 4th division . For the 2017/18 season , the BSC Young Boys finally acquired the transfer rights to Mbabu and provided him with a contract that ran until June 30, 2020. This season Mbabu was a regular player and was used in 32 league games in which he scored two goals. With the team he won the BSC Young Boys' first championship title in 32 years. In the 2018/19 season , the title was defended under the new coach Gerardo Seoane . Mbabu played for the first time in the UEFA Champions League , in which he appeared in five group matches.
Move to Germany
For the 2019/20 season, Mbabu moved to the German Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg . At the end of April 2019 he signed a contract with Wolves until 2023. In his fourth Bundesliga match for Wolfsburg on December 18, 2019, he scored his first Bundesliga goal after a corner in a 1-1 draw against FC Schalke 04 .
In the national team
Mbabu is a former junior national player from Switzerland and was in action from the U16 to the U20.
On September 8, 2018, Mbabu made his senior national team debut in the first group match of the UEFA Nations League against Iceland and played through.

Mbabu was born in Switzerland. His mother comes from the Congo . He did not get to know his father, a Frenchman.
