Karl "Karli" Odermatt (born December 17, 1942 in Lucerne ; resident in Dallenwil ) is a former Swiss football player . The midfielder is one of the best players who have ever played for FC Basel and BSC Young Boys . When he was under contract with FC Basel between 1962 and 1975, the club experienced one of the most successful times and dominated the championship. Odermatt, who is considered a legend by the fans, scored 107 goals in his 407 games in the top Swiss division (1962–1980).

Career

Odermatt grew up in Lucerne; when he was nine years old, his family moved with him to Basel . A junior coach at FC Concordia Basel , Georges Gröflin, discovered the young Karli on a school playground and invited him to a trial training session. A week later, Odermatt was part of the C-Junior team.

In the summer of 1962, Odermatt moved to FC Basel. He made his debut at the Landhof in September against AC Lugano and scored two goals. In the 1962/63 season, under FCB coach Georges Sobotka , Odermatt and FCB won the cup final 2-0 against the favored Grasshopper Club Zurich in the Wankdorf Stadium . In 1965 the German player Helmut Benthaus was brought to Basel as a player- coach. Under Benthaus, Odermatt won the championship five times and the Swiss Cup twice.

Odermatt played at FCB for 13 seasons. At that time teammates at FC Basel were u. a. Paul Fischli , Ottmar Hitzfeld , Urs Siegenthaler and Peter Ramseier .

During the 1973 summer break, Odermatt moved to Bern to join the BSC Young Boys . He stayed here for a total of four years. In 1977 he and the team won the Swiss Cup with a 1-0 win against FC St. Gallen .

For the Swiss national football team , he scored ten goals in 50 games. Among them, he scored 1-1 on November 10, 1971 in Wembley against England. Other players in the national team at the time were, for example, Rolf Blättler , Jakob Kuhn and Fritz Künzli .

Person and private

Legend has it that a friend of Odermatt, Herbert "Bobby" Kaufmann, who coached the first division club FC Herzogenbuchsee in the 1981/82 season , asked Odermatt for help: Kaufmann's team was on the relegation zone on the last day of the season there was a playoff to maintain the league against FC Unterstrass , a neighborhood club of the city of Zurich . The GC legend René Deck , 37 years old at the time , stood in the gate of the Unterstrasser . The 39-year-old Odermatt was placed in the Herzogenbuchsee team and scored two hits in a 5-1 win; so the club managed to stay up.

In 1992, Odermatt and Bruno Rahmen were interim coach at FC Basel after Ernst-August Künnecke was fired . Friedel Rausch later took on the role of coach. After a few less successful activities, including in the hospitality and wine trade, Odermatt returned to FC Basel in 2000 as a prominent FCB figurehead in the marketing and sponsoring sector. He is still active in the marketing department of FC Basel as well as a columnist and TV expert.

His biography was published in 2002 under the title "Karli none Gool!".
