Player career

society

Ruedi Elsener was born in 1953 and played as a winger for Grasshopper Club Zurich , FC Zurich , Eintracht Frankfurt , Neuchâtel Xamax and finally for Vevey and Yverdon. He began his career in 1970 with Grasshopper Zurich. In the following year he and his team were close to winning the Swiss championship . Equal on points with FC Basel , it was only enough to finish second because of the poorer goal difference. It was not until 1977/78 that the title was to be secured. On May 27, 1978, on the last match day, the Grasshoppers were able to prevail 4-2 against FC Basel and thus secured the national title. After it was still 2-2 up until the 78th minute , Elsener decided the game in favor of his team with a brace. In the 1977/78 UEFA Cup competition, the Swiss team moved into the spotlight when they managed to advance to the semi-finals, where they were eliminated after 3-2 and 0-1 against French representatives SEC Bastia . Before that, they beat teams like Eintracht Frankfurt and Dinamo Tiflis . Elsener was in both semi-finals, but could not prevent the elimination. In addition, you could move into the final of the Swiss Cup in the same year . After the first game against Servette FC Genève ended 2-2, a replay had to be played, which Zurich lost 1-0. The striker drew attention to himself with good performances and aroused the interest of other clubs. In addition to third place in the list of goalscorers , he was voted Swiss Footballer of the Year . In the summer of 1978 Elsener then left the Grasshoppers and joined the German club Eintracht Frankfurt. Although he was used in 33 Bundesliga matches and was the best attacker of his team with six goals behind Werner Lorant and Bernd Hölzenbein , he never felt really comfortable. Elsener made his Bundesliga debut on August 12, 1978 in the away game against FC Schalke 04 , when coach Otto Knefler offered him in the starting lineup. The match was lost 0: 4. After only one year in Germany, the attacker went back to Switzerland and signed with FC Zurich. With these he reached the final of the national cup again in 1981, but had to give up again and let Lausanne-Sports go ahead with 3: 4 . However, the team managed to win the championship in the 1980/81 season . After 179 competitive games and 38 goals, Elsener and Zurich split and the offensive player moved to Neuchâtel Xamax. In 1985 he made it to the final of the Swiss Cup for the third time with his third Swiss club. Again he was inferior with his team. After two years in Neuchâtel, Elsener left the club to end his career after one year at Vevey Sports in National League B and another at Yverdon-Sport FC .

National team

Elsener played a total of 48 international matches for Switzerland between 1974 and 1983 . During this time he was appointed to the squad by five different national coaches. Elsener's high point with the team came in 1982 when he scored the most important of his six goals for a 1-0 victory against reigning world champions Italy .
