Stéphane Henchoz (born September 7, 1974 in Billens ) is a former Swiss football player and current coach .
Henchoz played in the central defender position . He was one of the first Swiss footballers to prevail at a top European club. At Liverpool FC he formed the central defense together with the Finn Sami Hyypiä from 2000 to 2004 . After a short trip to Scotland to Celtic Glasgow , he played in the English Premier League for Wigan Athletic for the 2005/06 season before moving to Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2006 . There, however, he only played twelve league games in two years and mainly had to contend with injuries. As a result, the club management released him on May 19, 2008. In October 2008, Henchoz ended his career.
He ran 72 times for the Swiss national football team and played at the European Championships in 1996 and 2004. In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , he was no longer considered. In 2001 and 2002 Henchoz was voted the best Swiss footballer abroad.
At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Stéphane Henchoz was signed as coach of the Swiss first division club FC Bulle .
In the 2018/19 season he was on the sidelines for the first time at Neuchâtel Xamax in the Raiffeisen Super League . When he switched to league rivals FC Sion in the 2019/20 season, he inherited the released Murat Yakin . On November 3, 2019, Henchoz resigned from the coaching post at FC Sion after a series of defeats. He returned to Xamax in July 2020.
