Career start in Switzerland
Barnetta learned to play football at the small St. Gallen district club FC Rotmonten . His talent was recognized early on, so that he soon moved to FC St. Gallen . There he began his professional career in 2002 and already fought for a regular place at the age of 17.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Loan to Hannover 96
For the 2004/05 season Barnetta moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . He was awarded in his first season to the league rivals Hannover 96 to gain match practice. However, due to injury, he came only to seven missions, with two hits.
Return to Leverkusen
He returned to Bayer 04 Leverkusen before the 2005/06 season . With six goals this season and seven assists, he was one of the top performers of his team and was one of the guarantors for advancing to fifth place in the second half of the season and reaching the UEFA Cup . In the following season he only scored one goal and two assists, but he was still a regular player and was on the field in 30 games. In the years that followed, Barnetta remained a constant in the Werkself and was always dangerous for goals. In the 2008/09 season, the Swiss advanced with Leverkusen to the final of the DFB Cup, in which the team was defeated by SV Werder Bremen .
Barnetta started the 2010/11 season under coach Jupp Heynckes again as a regular player, but shortly after the start of the second half of the season he suffered a tear in the medial meniscus in a test match that put him out of action for a long time. He only returned to the team on matchday 27 and did not play a full game for the rest of the season. It was the first year in which he played fewer than 30 league games for Bayer. Nevertheless, he achieved the best result of his career in the Bundesliga with the team in second place.
Before the start of the 2011/12 season, he tore a muscle ligament. That's why he was missing until March 2012. On March 24, 2012 he made his comeback when he came on as a substitute for André Schürrle on matchday 27 against Schalke 04 in the 71st minute . Against 1. FC Kaiserslautern and against Hertha him get an assist respectively. By the end of the season there were a total of seven league games, with only one playing over 90 minutes. Barnetta refused to extend his contract, which expired on June 30, 2012; he left Leverkusen after eight years.
FC Schalke 04
In the summer break of 2012, FC Schalke 04 signed Barnetta; he received a contract valid until June 30, 2015. In his first season he made 21 appearances in the Bundesliga, but he was only twice in the first team and only played one game over 90 minutes. In none of the three competitions he scored a goal, he only gave one assist in the Bundesliga. Against the competition like the experienced Jefferson Farfán , Michel Bastos and Raffael or the young Lewis Holtby , Julian Draxler and Max Meyer , he could not prevail and fell short of expectations.
Loan to Eintracht Frankfurt
On September 2, 2013, Barnetta was awarded to Eintracht Frankfurt for the remainder of the season .
Return to Schalke 04
After a successful year for Barnetta at Eintracht, he returned to FC Schalke 04 for the 2014/15 season after the club had not been able to reach an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt regarding a further loan or a firm commitment. On September 23, 2014, he scored his first goal for Schalke in a 3-0 away win against Werder Bremen . Nevertheless, it did not play a major role in Jens Keller's plans. It was only under Roberto Di Matteo that he had more playing time and scored 3-1 in the 4-1 win against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . In the 4-0 away win against VfB Stuttgart , he contributed to Schalke's victory with three assists. Barnetta is not extending his contract, which is running out at the end of the season.
Philadelphia Union
At the end of July 2015, he moved to the Philadelphia Union in the North American Major League Soccer . He signed a contract that ran until the end of 2016.
Return to FC St. Gallen
Barnetta has played for FC St. Gallen again since January 1, 2017. His contract ran until summer 2019.

At the beginning of June 2004 he was called up to replace the injured Johann Lonfat in the Swiss senior team for the Euro 2004 , but was not used in the tournament itself. His debut in the national team then took place in the World Cup qualifier against Ireland on September 8, 2004.
He scored his first international goal on March 1, 2006 in the Swiss team's 3-1 win against Scotland in Glasgow , making it 1-0. On June 19, 2006 Barnetta contributed in the second World Cup group game against Togo with a goal and an assist to the 2-0 victory of his team.
