Beginnings at Alemannia Aachen

Interim coach Jörg Schmadtke called the 17-year-old into the professional squad for the first time on matchday 16 of the 2007/08 season and Holtby came on for his first second division appearance after being substituted in the 80th minute in a 2-2 draw against FC St. Pauli . In addition, the school holidays enabled him to travel to Breisgau on matchday 25 against SC Freiburg with the professionals from Alemannia Aachen . He only watched the game from the stands. On May 18, 2008, the last day of the 2007/08 season, coach Jürgen Seeberger took him into the starting line-up in the game against TuS Koblenz and let him play through.

Although he was still in the younger age group of the A-youth , he played his first game for Aachen II in the Oberliga Nordrhein on March 15, 2008 . From then on he was a permanent member of the amateur squad.

In the course of the 2008/09 season Holtby established himself in the professional team of Alemannia, in which he drew attention to himself with some good games and assists. On December 5, 2008, Holtby scored his first second division goal in the game against TSV 1860 Munich and on February 15, 2009 against 1. FC Nürnberg for the first time two goals in one game. In that game he was also watched by scouts from other clubs, who then expressed their interest. Those interested also included Bundesliga clubs and foreign clubs.

For the 2009/10 season , Holtby moved to Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 . He played his first Bundesliga game on matchday one at 1. FC Nürnberg.

During the winter break of the 2009/10 season, Holtby was loaned to VfL Bochum for a year and a half until June 30, 2011 . For Bochum he scored his first goal in the Bundesliga on March 13, 2010 in the game against Borussia Dortmund . After the relegation of Bochum at the end of the season, Holtby's loan contract ended prematurely.

For the 2010/11 season he was loaned to the Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 . In his first competitive game for the club, he scored both goals in the DFB Cup match against the Berliner AK 07 on August 15, 2010. He was a regular player and top performer at Mainz. At times he was leader of the table with this team. He made a total of 30 Bundesliga appearances, scored four goals and finished the Bundesliga season in 5th place. This table placement was synonymous with qualifying for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League . Together with André Schürrle and Ádám Szalai , they became known as the “Bruchweg Boys” because they always celebrated their goals with a goal celebration that resembled a band.

After the loan contract ended, Holtby returned to FC Schalke 04 for the 2011/12 season. Holtby played a total of 27 times this season, in which Schalke 04 finished third in the table. Here Holtby scored six goals. Holtby played nine times in the Europa League.

Premier League

Holtby at Fulham FC (2014)

On January 4, 2013, the Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur announced the commitment of Holtby to July 1, 2013. On January 28, 2013, both clubs agreed on an immediate transfer. Two days after the move, Holtby made his debut for his new club on January 30, 2013 in the game at Norwich City . He had his first starting eleven at the home game against Newcastle United on February 9, 2013.

On January 31, 2014, Holtby moved to Fulham on loan until the end of the 2013/14 season . After relegation to the second English division , he initially returned to the Spurs.

Hamburger SV

On September 1, 2014, Holtby initially moved back to the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV on loan until the end of the 2014/15 season . According to a clause, Holtby was already firmly committed after three missions after the 5th match day and provided with a contract until June 30, 2018.

Training camp of HSV in Dubai he broke in a game against Eintracht Frankfurt , the clavicle and the HSV for over two months and was not to return round start available. In the away defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on March 14, 2015, Holtby made his comeback.

Under Bruno Labbadia , Holtby was one of the permanent staff in the 2015/16 season . He was in the starting line-up in all 34 Bundesliga games and scored three goals. Also in the 2016/17 season he was a regular player under Labbadia and Markus Gisdol with 29 appearances. In 2017/18 , Holtby was sorted out by Gisdol and was not used from the tenth to the 18th day inclusive. Even in the seven games under Gisdol's successor Bernd Hollerbach , Holtby was not used. Before the 27th matchday, Christian Titz took over the team under which Holtby had already taken private training and with whom he maintains a friendly contact. In the last eight games, Holtby was used in the starting line-up and scored five goals. HSV was able to reduce the distance to the relegation place from seven to two points under Titz, but was relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time on May 12, 2018. For his achievements in the second half of the season, Holtby was listed by Kicker-Sportmagazin in the ranking of German football for the summer of 2018 on the position of "midfield offensive" in the "wider circle".

Despite relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga , Holtby extended his expiring contract for the 2018/19 season . Initially still a regular under Titz, he was no longer a regular under the new coach Hannes Wolf , who took over the team at the end of October 2018. In March 2019, the club announced that they would not make a new contract offer to Holtby. Before the 31st match day, Holtby asked coach Wolf not to have to go to the away game against direct promotion rivals Union Berlin after he had not trained in the starting eleven in the final training. He also said this in front of the team. Shortly thereafter, Holtby revised his statement at Wolf and admitted his mistake, but was still removed from the squad until his contract ended and transferred to the second team for training. Holtby completed 26 second division games in his final year at HSV, in which he scored four goals. In total, he played in five years under seven coaches in 127 league games in which he scored 14 goals.

Return to England

Since the end of July 2019, Holtby has kept fit under Christian Titz at the regional division Rot-Weiss Essen . On September 19, 2019, he joined the Blackburn Rovers . He signed a contract with the English second division club that ran until June 30, 2021.

On September 5, 2009, he made his first game against South Africa in the German U-20 national team , with which he took part in the 2009 Junior World Cup .

On September 7, 2010 he scored two goals with the U-21 against Northern Ireland as part of the European Championship qualification .

Since Holtby, the son of an Englishman, also has British citizenship, there was also the opportunity to play for the English association until his A-compulsory international debut . In an interview in the current sports studio , however, he confirmed that if he was appointed to the senior national team, he wanted to play for the German team. On November 10, 2010, he and his team-mate André Schürrle were nominated for the first time for the squad of the international match against Sweden on November 17 , where he was in the starting line-up. On June 7, 2011, Holtby made his compulsory international debut for the German national team in the European Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan and is therefore only eligible to play for the DFB.

After he had not been considered for a year and a half, he was re -nominated for the national team after some players had canceled the game on November 14, 2012 in Amsterdam against the Netherlands .
