Antonio "Toni" Rüdiger (born March 3, 1993 in Berlin ) is a German soccer player . He has been under contract with Chelsea since summer 2017 .

family

Rüdiger's mother comes from Sierra Leone , his father from Germany. Born in Berlin, he is the half-brother of the former soccer player Sahr Senesie , who is his advisor.

Club career

The 1.90 meter tall Rüdiger played in his youth a. a. for the Neukölln clubs VfB Sperber Neukölln, Tasmania Gropiusstadt and the Neukölln Sportfreunde 1907 . In 2006 he joined Hertha Zehlendorf , from where he moved to the youth team at Borussia Dortmund in 2008 .

VfB Stuttgart

In the spring of 2011 he signed a contract with VfB Stuttgart , although he was not eligible to play for six months because of this change. On July 23, 2011 on the 1st matchday of the 2011/12 season , Rüdiger made his professional debut as a U-19 player for VfB Stuttgart II in the 3rd division against Arminia Bielefeld .

He made his debut on January 29, 2012 in the home game of VfB Stuttgart against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga . In this game, the trained central defender was used as a right-back due to injuries to his teammates, just like in the 3rd division. On October 4, 2012 he completed his first international competitive game at club level in the Europa League on matchday two of the 2012/13 group stage against Molde FK . After Maza left during the winter break, Rüdiger was placed in the central defense of the Stuttgart Bundesliga team during the second half of the 2012/13 season , mostly when one of the two regular central defenders Georg Niedermeier and Serdar Tasci were injured or suspended. On April 19, 2013, Rüdiger prematurely extended his contract with VfB Stuttgart until the end of June 2017. Rüdiger scored his first Bundesliga goal on September 1, 2013 in a 6-2 home win for Stuttgart against TSG Hoffenheim .

AS Roma

On August 19, 2015, Rüdiger moved to AS Roma for a loan fee of four million euros until the end of the 2015/16 season . In addition, the clubs agreed on a fixed purchase option with an additional transfer fee of nine million euros. He made his Serie A debut on September 12, 2015 in the 2-0 away win by the Romans against Frosinone Calcio . Four days later, he played for the first time in the Champions League in the 1-1 draw between AS Roma and FC Barcelona on the first match day of the 2015/16 group stage . Rüdiger scored his first goal in Serie A on January 9, 2016 against AC Milan .

For the 2016/17 season , AS Roma signed Rüdiger for the fixed transfer fee of nine million euros from VfB Stuttgart, who had been relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . His contract term was set until June 30, 2020.

Chelsea FC

On July 9, 2017, Rüdiger moved to English champions FC Chelsea in the Premier League . Rome and Chelsea agreed on a transfer fee of 35 million euros and additional payments of up to four million euros. On August 12, 2017, he made his debut in the 3-2 defeat of Chelsea in the first game of the season against Burnley FC in the Premier League. On May 19, 2018, Rüdiger won the FA Cup with Chelsea against Manchester United 1-0.

National team

At a four-nation tournament in Israel , Rüdiger scored the decisive goal for the German U-18 national team on December 17, 2010 in the final against the USA in the final minute with a free kick to make it 2-1. For the German U-19 national team he made his debut on May 31, 2011 against Hungary in the qualification for the U-19 European Championship 2011 , although he was still eligible to play for the U-18 at that time. He made a total of 13 U-19 internationals. On May 27, 2012 he scored his first goal in the U-19 jersey against Romania in the 87th minute to make it 1-0. The game ended 1-1.

Rüdiger played for the U-20 national team of Germany on September 9, 2012 against Poland for the first time. On November 14, 2012, he made his debut for the German U-21 national team against Turkey and was in action over the full game distance. He was nominated on May 24, 2013 for the U-21 European Championship 2013 .

On May 8, 2014, national coach Joachim Löw nominated Rüdiger for the senior team for the test international match against Poland's selection on May 13, 2014 in Hamburg. In this encounter he made his debut for one half and was substituted for Benedikt Höwedes in the second half . The national team's official fan club selected Rüdiger as player of the game for his international A debut.

On August 29, 2014 he was appointed to the DFB squad for the direct remake of the World Cup final against Argentina on September 3, 2014 as well as for the start of the qualification for the 2016 European Championship against Scotland on September 7, 2014 and completed his second against Argentina A international match. Rüdiger made his A compulsory international debut on October 11, 2014 in the European Championship qualifier against Poland on the starting line-up and is therefore no longer eligible to play for other associations.

Rüdiger was in the national team for the 2016 European Football Championship , but suffered a serious knee injury during team training in Évian-les-Bains and was replaced by Jonathan Tah .

National coach Joachim Löw nominated Antonio Rüdiger for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia . During the tournament he came on four missions, including the 1-0 final victory over Chile , which meant winning the Confederations Cup. He was also part of the German squad at the 2018 World Cup and had an appearance in the preliminary round.
