First attempt in Europe

In 2004, the then 19-year-old defender came to Europe from his Brazilian hometown club Esporte Clube Juventude to join the then reigning Champions League winners FC Porto . Even with this change, the media speculated about the transfer fee, which should have been up to three million US dollars or 2.5 million euros . Thiago was only used in the second team of the Portuguese first division club .

In January 2005 he moved to Dynamo Moscow along with three other players, including Derlei and Jorge Ribeiro ( Maniche's younger brother ) . At the Russian club, the central defender wore the number 84 on his back . The time in Russia was largely shaped by tuberculosis . Due to the illness, he spent six months in the hospital, two of them in isolation.

Return to Brazil

He was transferred back to South America to Fluminense FC in early 2006 , with whom he won the 2007 cup . In 2008 he reached the final of the Copa Libertadores with his team , but lost to LDU Quito . Since a player with the footballer name “Thiago” (Thiago Pimentel Gosling) was already under contract at Fluminense , Thiago has been called Thiago Silva since his move back to Brazil . At the Pó-de-Arroz he was used regularly and became a regular player. Good performances moved him into the wider circle of the national team and the focus of European teams.

Breakthrough in Europe at AC Milan

In December 2008, AC Milan wanted to bring him to Italy. Due to the foreigner restriction, Thiago Silva was only allowed to play competitive games for AC Milan from the 2009/10 season and therefore only moved to Milan in the summer of 2009. Right away he earned a regular place. On August 22, 2009, the first match day of the Serie A season , Thiago Silva made his debut in Italian league football against AC Siena . On matchday 12 he headed the 1-0 lead in a 2-1 away win at Lazio Rome ; it was his first goal for Milan. At AC he made 93 league appearances.

In the 2010/2011 season , Silva and Alessandro Nesta formed the core line-up of AC Milan’s central defense, played an excellent season and played a major role in ensuring that his club won the championship. In early 2012, he was named the best Serie A defender of 2011, which cemented his reputation as one of the best defenders in the world.

Paris Saint-Germain

During the summer break of 2012, Thiago Silva moved to the French Ligue 1 to Paris Saint-Germain . He signed a five-year contract until June 30, 2017. It was agreed not to disclose the transfer fee; According to media reports, it should have been around 40 million euros. Thiago Silva was not once "disposessed" in league games in 2016/17 and 2017/18 . His average pass rate in the 2017/18 season was 96.1%. The PSG captain has collected more yellow cards than ever in the season: 5 in 25 games. In addition to the exorbitantly high number of warnings for him, there is also a comparatively below-average value for fouls: In total, he only committed 24 fouls in 25 games. In 2016/17 it was still a yellow card after 14 fouls in 27 games. After a total of 310 games and 17 goals for Paris Saint-Germain, Thiago Silva is leaving the club, according to the club's president.

Chelsea FC

After his contract with Paris Saint-Germain ended, the 35-year-old Silva moved to the Premier League for Chelsea in the 2020/21 season . He signed a one-year contract with an option for another season.

National team

Before that he was in the squad of a U23 team for the Olympic Games , where he made two appearances. In this tournament the team secured 3rd place.

Although rarely nominated, Thiago Silva was in the 2010 squad for the World Cup finals appointed. The team reached the quarter-finals, in which they were eliminated against the Netherlands . As the only field player besides Luisão , Thiago Silva was not used during the entire tournament.

In 2012 he also took part in the Olympic Games in London with the Olympic team - as one of three older players and as a captain . Only in the final Brazil had to admit defeat Mexico 1: 2 . He was used in all six games.

For the World Cup in his own country, he was set up as captain in all games up to the quarter-finals. Defeated for the semifinals, where Brazil Germany, it was because of two yellow cards blocked . When the new coach Carlos Dunga took over , he lost the captaincy to Neymar .
