Liga Deportiva Universitaria , LDU for short and often called Liga de Quito in South America , commonly known as LDU Quito in German-speaking countries , is a football club from the Ecuadorian capital Quito, founded in 1930 . The highlight of the club's history is winning the Copa Libertadores in 2008 . In addition, LDU won the Copa Sudamericana , twice the Recopa Sudamericana and ten national championships.

history

The history of the club goes back to 1918, when students from the Universidad Central del Ecuador founded a soccer team. In 1930 it took on the form of a club as the Liga Deportiva Universitaria and won its first local title in 1932. In the 1950s and 1960s she won the non-amateur championship of the Pichincha Province several times . The years between 1969 and 1976 mark a first high point in the club's history. In 1969, Liga de Quito won the first of ten national championships. In 1976, the team reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores , which was then played in two groups of three teams. Liga finished second in its group, behind Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte from Brazil, and did not make it to the final.

The time around the turn of the millennium is a second very successful period in the club's history. In 2004, the league reached the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana , but was eliminated against the Bolivian representative Club Bolívar . In 2008 League reached the first time the final of the Copa Libertadores , the team against Fluminense after 4: 2 and 1: 3 in-and-away (no away goals rule) on penalties in the Maracana chose one of its own: 3 . Liga became the first Ecuadorian team to win the Copa Libertadores and qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup , where they reached the final with a 2-0 win over Mexican representatives Pachuca CF. The Ecuadorian press then emphasized that the FIFA bonus for the runner-up (approx. 4 million US dollars) corresponds to a large part of the team's annual budget (approx. 6-7 million US dollars). In July 2009 the team won the South American Super Cup against Copa Sudamericana winner SC Internacional from Porto Alegre (Brazil) 1-0 and 3-0 .

After Liga de Quito played in various stadiums for decades and most recently shared the national stadium Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa with El Nacional , Deportivo Quito and Club Deportivo Espoli , in 1997 the own stadium Estadio La Casa Blanca (in German White House , after the predominant club color) inaugurated, which is considered to be one of the most modern and atmospheric stadiums in the country. The stadium is located in the north of Quito in the Cotocollao district and has a capacity of 55,104 seats, which is, however, limited to 42,000 for security reasons for international games such as the first leg of the Copa Libertadores 2008 and must therefore be reduced accordingly for such games.
