history

The club was founded in 1989 and started off with a strong season, winning the Serie B championship in 1989 and moving up to the top Serie A in its first season. Surprisingly, the young team was able to stay in Serie A until 1995 and then relegated to Serie B. While in Serie A, the club was nicknamed El ídolo de Manta (Manta's Idol), a nickname previously given to Manta Sport Club , which was Manta's previous team in the first division.

In 1998 the club returned to the top division, to return to Serie B in 1999 and to rise again in 2000. The last season in Serie A for the time being was 2001. In 2007, the club was relegated to the third-class Segunda Categoría. After being promoted to the Ecuadorian Serie B, they managed to return to the Ecuadorian Serie A in the 2016 season, in which their Argentine striker Maximiliano Barreiro was the top scorer in the league with 26 goals.

The following season, 2017, was a historic year for the club, in which they were strong with only one loss in the first leg and won the Primera Etapa of the Ecuadorian Serie A. This was the first time that Delfín automatically qualified for the Copa Libertadores , making it the first team from Manabi Province to take part in an international tournament. On December 17, Delfín lost in the second leg of the final of the Ecuadorian Serie A championship at the Estadio Jocay 2-0 to Club Sport Emelec and ended the season as runner-up.

On April 5, 2018, Delfín won his first international victory after beating Chilean club CSD Colo-Colo 2-0 at the Copa Libertadores 2018 . At the end of the league season Delfín was fourth and thus had the ticket to the second Copa Libertadores.

2019 was the biggest year for the team as they won their first Seria A title and for the first time a team from their province won a league title. The playoff game in the championship was played against the LDU Quito and won 2-1 on penalties.
