Although the SD Aucas has never won the soccer championship in Ecuador, it is one of the most popular clubs in the country. Your arch rival is the city rival LDU Quito .

history

The Sociedad Deportiva Aucas was founded on February 6, 1945 under the leadership of the Dutchman Marius Federico Hulswit. Hulswit was relations manager for the Shell Company of Ecuador at the time and also became the first club president. Originally, the club was to be named Club Deportivo Shell , but this was not allowed by the country's authorities due to the economic entanglement. Therefore, a very Ecuadorian name was chosen, which was chosen in honor of the indigenous indigenous people of the Waorani , who were called "Auca" (savages, barbarians, warriors, etc.) by outsiders for a long time.

Immediately after its establishment, the SD Aucas won five times in a row (1945-1949) the regional championship of the Pichincha province , in which the capital Quito is located, and was able to repeat this success in 1951 again. With a total of six championship titles, it was the second most successful team in the history of the regional championship of this province, which was held between 1922 and 1953. Record champion Gladiador won his total of 13 titles by 1944, but could not win any more titles after Aucas' founding.

With the abolition of the amateur-based regional championship of the Pichincha province at the end of 1953 and the transition to professional football - in 1957 the first national football championship was introduced, which was suspended in the two following years 1958 and 1959 and has only been held regularly since 1960 - took place between 1954 and in 1967 the Campeonato Interandino took place, in which only teams from Quito and Ambato were allowed to participate. In this tournament Aucas was able to record his last title wins so far in the seasons 1959 and 1962.

Although Aucas was one of only four founding members of the Campeonato Nacional de clubes en Ecuador , the forerunner to today's Serie A , but finished last and took until 1962 back to the national championship in part, the first on participants in the cities of Quito and Guayaquil were limited ; It was not until the 1970s that the tournament developed into a real national championship.

Aucas remained an "elevator crew" for long stretches and got down again in 1963. The return to 1965 was followed by another relegation in 1966. Between 1968 and 1970, Aucas was first class for three years in a row and also between 1975 and 1977. After the immediate resurgence in the 1979 season, relegation followed and another three-year membership in the first division between 1982 and 1984.

The most successful phase of the club since the introduction of Serie A were the twenty years in the period from 1987 to 2006, when Aucas - with the exception of the 1991 season - was constantly represented in the top division. Between 1998 and 2005 Aucas even took top positions in the national championship several times: A third place in the final table of the Apertura 1998 was followed by second place in the Apertura 2000 and the Apertura 2002. The best season was 2004, when Aucas was both in the final table of the Apertura took first place in 2004 as well as in the overall annual table, but only took sixth place in the official championship finals and therefore once again missed the championship title. Their last major success so far was second place in the Clausura 2005. Their Colombian striker Omar Guerra , who was top scorer in the league with 17 goals in the same period, played a major role in this success .

At the end of the 2006 season, Aucas finished last and was relegated from Serie A. Three years later, they were even relegated to the third-class Segunda Categoría , from which the team was only able to escape three years later (late 2012). In 2014 SD Aucas won the second division and rose to Serie A. Two years later, Aucas relegated to Serie B. AUcas rose straight back to the top division from 2017.
