Copa Sudamericana 2002
The Copa Sudamericana 2002 was the 1st playout of the newly created South American soccer competition for club teams. In this first season, 21 teams from 9 member associations of CONMEBOL took part, with each country getting two starting places except Argentina, which was allowed to send five clubs into the race, including the winner of the last Copa Mercosur 2001 CA San Lorenzo de Almagro . The clubs from Brazil took u. a. did not participate due to scheduling reasons. The competition was played in the second half of the year and was considered the successor to the Copa Mercosur and Copa Merconorte , which were played from 1998 to 2001 and the Copa Conmebol from 1992 to 1999 . It started on August 28, 2002 with the first round and ended on December 11, 2002 with the final second leg in Buenos Aires.

The competition is played from the first round to the final in a pure knockout system with a return leg. In the event of a tie for points and goals , the away goal rule applies . If the number of goals scored away from home is the same, a penalty shoot-out follows immediately after the second leg . This rule also applied to the final. The participants from Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay only intervened in the second round.

Participants were the two representatives from Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela, each of which had to compete against each other. The first legs took place on August 28 and 29 and September 3 and 4, the second legs between September 6 and 12, 2002.

Round of 16
Participants were the five winners of the 1st round and the representatives of Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay, whereby the teams of the last four countries, apart from San Lorenzo, each had to compete against each other. The first legs took place between the 3rd and 19th, the second leg between the 17th and 26th September 2002.
