Copa Sudamericana 2013
The Copa Sudamericana 2013 was the 12th staging of the second most important South American football competition for club teams, which has been known as the "Copa Total Sudamericana" since 2013 due to the sponsorship of the French mineral oil company Total . As in the previous year, 47 teams from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL , including defending champions FC São Paulo, took part. Argentina had six and Brazil eight participants as usual; the other eight countries each have four participants in the competition. As before, this was played in the second half of the year.
mode
As in the previous year, there were two rounds before the round of 16. In the first round, the eight countries (with the exception of Argentina and Brazil) started with their four teams each. The participants from Argentina and Brazil only joined in the second round, with the teams from both countries playing against each other. Defending champion São Paulo FC had a bye to the round of 16. As usual, the competition was held from the first round to the final in a pure knockout system with a return game. In the event of a tie for points and goals , the away goal rule applied . If the number of goals scored away from home was the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately after the second leg . The away goals rule did not apply in the final. If the goal difference was the same after the first and second leg, there was extra time and only then, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out.
1 round
Participants were four teams each from eight countries in South America, with the exception of the teams from Argentina and Brazil. The first legs took place between July 30 and August 2, the second legs between August 6 and 9, 2013.
