Copa Sudamericana 2005
The Copa Sudamericana 2005 was the 4th edition of the second most important South American football competition for club teams, which was also known as the "Copa Nissan Sudamericana" due to the sponsorship of the automobile manufacturer Nissan . In this fourth season, a total of 34 teams, including defending champion Boca Juniors, took part. Including 31 teams from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL and for the first time 3 teams from the CONCACAF area . These were Club América and UNAM Pumas from Mexico and DC United from the USA. As before, the competition was held in the second half of the year. He started on 9 August 2005 with the elimination in Bolivia and Uruguay and ended on 18 December 2005 with the final second leg in Buenos Aires . The Boca Juniors was able to defend its title and win the Copa Sudamericana a second time as the first team.
mode
Compared to the previous year, there were some changes to the competition mode. For the first time a round of 16 was played for which the respective winners of the regional elimination rounds qualified as usual. Another six teams qualified directly for the round of 16. These were three teams from Argentina and the three teams from the CONCACAF division. From the last sixteen onwards, the game was played in a pure knockout system with a return leg. In the event of a tie for points and goals , the away goal rule applied . If the number of goals scored away from home was the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately after the second leg . This rule also applied to the final.
