Marcelo Delgado (born March 24, 1973 in Capitán Bermúdez ), also known by the nickname El Chelo , is a former Argentine football player on the position of the striker .

Life

Delgado began his professional career in 1990 at Rosario Central , a club in the Santa Fe area where he was born and raised.

In 1994 he moved to the CD Cruz Azul in the Mexican league , but returned after just one year to his homeland, where he was under contract with the Racing Club for the next four and a half years .

At the turn of the year 1999/2000 he made the "jump" from Avellaneda over the Río Riachuelo to La Boca and played from the beginning of 2000 to mid-2003 for the Boca Juniors , with whom he won the Copa Libertadores three times during this time ( 2000 , 2001 and 2003 ) , the South American counterpart to the European Champions League , and won the World Cup once (2000 with a 2-1 win over Real Madrid ). He was also in the starting line-up in the 2001 World Cup final against FC Bayern Munich , but became the tragic player who was primarily responsible for the defeat of his team. Already warned with yellow, he penetrated Bayern's penalty area immediately before the break whistle, played around Oliver Kahn , who was falling towards him - and let himself fall. Instead of the hoped-for penalty, he received the yellow-red card and had to leave the field early. From this point on, Boca had to limit themselves to defending the 0-0 defend and lost 1-0 in overtime with a goal from Samuel Kuffour in the 109th minute of the game.

After Delgado had been under contract with Cruz Azul again until the end of 2004, he returned to the Boca Juniors in early 2005 and won other titles with them. He then played for Belgrano de Córdoba and ended his active career in late 2008 with the Ecuadorian Barcelona Sporting Club .

Together with the Brazilian Ricardo Oliveira from the final opponent FC Santos , who also scored nine goals in this competition, Delgado was the top scorer of the 2003 Copa Libertadores.

In addition, Delgado came to 18 missions for the Argentine national team ; Among other things, he was part of the Argentine squad at the 1996 Summer Olympics and at the 1998 World Cup .
