The Río Matanza-Riachuelo , better known as the Riachuelo , is a 64 km long river in the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina . It flows into the Río de la Plata in Buenos Aires .

description

From its source to the La Noria Bridge on Avenida General Paz , the river is known as Río La Matanza and from then on as Riachuelo. Around 3.5 million people live in its 2240  km² river basin.

The main tributaries of the Riachuelo are the Cañuelas, Chacón and Morales in the province of Buenos Aires and the Cildánez in the Gran Buenos Aires region.

The south-east wind Sudestada regularly prevents the Riachuelo from reaching the Río de la Plata, which regularly leads to flooding in lower-lying areas such as La Boca and Barracas . A number of measures have been taken since 1995 to prevent such flooding.

environmental issues

The watercourse receives large quantities of industrial waste water from the numerous factories along its banks, particularly from dye works, which is why the Riachuelo is very polluted. The most dangerous pollutants include heavy metals and wastewater from the no longer absorbent soil layers in the river basin.

In 1993, during the government of Carlos Menem , the Environment Minister María Julia Alsogaray presented a three-year project to clean up the Riachuelo. However, the project was never completed. Alsogaray was convicted of misusing public funds. According to the Argentine daily Página 12, only 90 million US dollars are left of the 250 million US dollar budget. US $ 150 million has been spent on unrelated river cleanup projects and only US $ 1 million has been used for actual purpose. Critics complain that only shipwrecks were lifted, but no efforts were made, that ships are simply abandoned and then sink into the river.

In 2006 the Autoridad de Cuenca Matanza Riachuelo (ACUMAR) was founded, which in 2008 was commissioned by the Supreme Court of Argentina with a new restructuring plan. The plan includes the excavation of shipwrecks and rubbish cleansing from the river, the relocation of slums and businesses polluting the river, and the control of industry in the area by ACUMAR. However, the slow progress of the plan led to the replacement of the head of this agency by the national government in 2011.

In 2013 the abuses mentioned led to the “nomination” of the river as one of the top 10 most polluted areas on earth by the Blacksmith Institute . Nobody believes that it will become an idyllic river; it would only be a success if at least the serious health risks for the population were averted.

bridges

Numerous bridges lead over the Riachuelo, some of which are also architecturally interesting. The ones listed below are car bridges, there are also six railway bridges.

  • Puente de la Autopista Buenos Aires - La Plata: It was inaugurated on July 1, 1995 and has a free height of 28 meters.
  • Puente Nicolás Avellaneda: It was inaugurated in 1940 and connects Buenos Aires with the Partido Avellaneda .
  • Puente Transbordador "Nicolás Avellaneda" : The bridge is one of the landmarks of La Boca . It dates from 1913. It has not been used since 1947.
  • Nuevo Puente Pueyrredón: It opened on December 19, 1969. It connects the Avenidas Miter and Hipólito Yrigoyen (Partido de Avellaneda) with the Autopista Nueve de Julio in Buenos Aires.
  • Puente Pueyrredón: It also connects Avenida Miter with Buenos Aires.
  • Puente Bosch: Known for a train wreck on July 12, 1930 in which 56 of 60 passengers died. Nowadays the bridge is only used by cars.
  • Puente Victorino de la Plaza: It was inaugurated in 1916 and connects Barracas with Piñeiro.
  • Puente Alsina: It dates from 1938 and connects Nueva Pompeya with the suburb Valentín Alsina . The bridge, built in the neoclassical style, replaced its predecessor from 1859.
