The Puente Transbordador "Nicolás Avellaneda" (also Transbordador del Riachuelo ) is a transporter ferry that crosses the Riachuelo between Buenos Aires and Avellaneda . It is one of only eight suspension ferries that have survived worldwide and, besides the Puente Nicolás Avellaneda in the immediate vicinity, the only one outside of Europe.

On September 25, 1908, the Ferrocarril del Sud received approval to build a transporter ferry between Isla Maciel and La Boca . This was inaugurated on May 31, 1914 and was named after the former Argentine President Nicolás Avellaneda . The gondola was 8 by 12 meters and could transport pedestrians, wagons, motor vehicles and trams. The crossing was controlled either from a control stand in the gondola or from the machine house.

In 1940 a new bridge was opened 100 m further. The transporter bridge remained in operation until the 1960s.

Around 1993 plans became known to demolish the transporter bridge. On the other hand, violent protests arose with the aim of preserving it as a cultural, historical and technical monument. As a result, she received in 1995 the status of Sitio de Interés Cultural and was carried Declaration on 1999 Monumento Histórico permanently protected.

A general renovation of the transporter bridge began in January 2013 with the aim of putting it back into operation. The work should take about a year and cost 17.8 million pesos . There was a significant delay, however, and the cost rose to peso 160 million. The re-inauguration finally took place on September 28, 2017; Due to political disputes between Buenos Aires and Avellaneda, however, the gondola did not cross the river completely, but turned back in the middle. Public operations have not yet resumed (as of July 2018).
