Nicolás Avellaneda
Nicolás Remigio Aurelio Avellaneda Silva (born October 3, 1837 in San Miguel de Tucumán , † November 25, 1885 on the high seas between France and Argentina) was President of Argentina between 1874 and 1880.
Live and act
Avellaneda came from a family of politicians: his father was the politician Marco Avallaneda (1813–1841); Nicolás Avellaneda y Tula (1786–1855) was his paternal grandfather; his mother was Dolores Silva y Zavaleta.
When he was four years old, his father was executed by the forces of the dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas . His mother and family therefore fled to Bolivia , where he lived until 1850. He returned that year to study law at the University of Cordoba . He interrupted his studies shortly before graduation to live with his family in Tucumán; but later completed his studies in Buenos Aires . He worked as a journalist and lawyer in Tucumán and Buenos Aires. In 1862 he became a member of parliament in the province of Buenos Aires . In 1866 Avellaneda became government minister under Governor Adolfo Alsina and later Argentine Minister of Justice under President Sarmiento .
He was elected President of Argentina on August 6, 1874, and took office amid a revolution (la mitrista) aimed at trying to make Bartolomé Miter president. On December 17 of the same year, about three months after he took office, the uprising came to an end.
Avellaneda was a president who tried above all to reintegrate thousands of emigrants and politically persecuted people into the life of the Argentine nation.
The end of his presidency is also marked by an uprising, the Tejedor uprising. This uprising, which was directed against the elevation of Buenos Aires to a federal city ( Distrito Federal ), was successfully suppressed and so the elevation was decided on September 21, 1880 by the Congress.
After his presidency he was rector of the University of Buenos Aires and senator.
The Avenida Avellaneda in Buenos Aires is named after him.
