Puente Nicolás Avellaneda
The Puente Nicolás Avellaneda is a 1650 meter long road bridge with two lanes over the Río Matanza-Riachuelo in Argentina .
history
The building, designed as a lift bridge, was erected between 1937 and 1940. The 57-meter-high lift bridge section offers passing ships a clearance height of 21 meters when not raised and 43 meters when raised. The Hubbrückensektion is provided with a floating ferry equipped and, like the adjacent Puente Transbordador "Nicolas Avellaneda" are used as a floating ferry. This was of great importance at the time of its construction in order to save horse-drawn vehicles the long and arduous journey over the ramps of the bridge.
The Puente Nicolás Avellaneda is the only lift bridge in the world that can also be used as a transporter bridge. However, this has only been in operation since 1960 when the bridge is closed for maintenance work.
