The Club Atlético Banfield is an Argentine football club from Banfield , a suburb of the capital in the province of Buenos Aires . The club, founded in 1896, plays in the Primera División in the 2010/11 season .

history

Club formation

Club Atlético Banfield is one of the oldest Argentine football clubs. In the 1880s, numerous English families settled in the area south of Buenos Aires . These families ensured that the suburb was built on the British model. On January 21, 1896, a group of local business people of English ancestry decided to start a sports club. The name Banfield comes from the suburb of the same name, which is named after the railroad worker Edward Banfield . At the head of the founding members were Daniel Kingsland and George Burton , who became President and Vice President. The first official game was a game of cricket on January 26, 1896, as it was President Kingsland's favorite sport.

Amateurs (first years)

Under Kingsland, the main focus of the club was on cricket, football was at the back, which was also noticeable in the results. But when Alfredo Goode, an avid football fan, became club president in 1899, this was about to change. In the same year, Banfield succeeded in relegating the English High School de Alejandro Watson Hutton to second place in the Argentine Segunda División. This makes Banfield the only club in the Argentine Football Association to win a championship in the 19th century. All players except for captain James Doods Watson, who was born in Buenos Aires and was Argentinian, came from Great Britain . In 1900 Banfield was able to repeat this success, but ascents were not possible at that time. George Burton was President of CA Banfield from 1904 until his death in 1928. In 1908, the first team that was represented in the Argentine Tercera División, won the league sovereign. Through this success, the team rose to the Segunda División. With this team Banfield fought in December 1910 in the semifinals for promotion to the first division against Racing Club, but failed after a 0-0 in the first leg by a 0-1 in the second leg. The decisive goal came in stoppage time of the game.

Amateurs (until the 1930s)

After this failure, the entire team was completely renewed, which led to relegation in 1911. In 1912 he was immediately promoted as a master in the Tercera División. A reorganization of the first division allowed Banfield to join the Primera División and two good seasons followed in 1913 and 1914, but when the First World War started in 1914 , many of the British players left the club to fight in Europe . In 1917 Banfield lost his first division place to return to the Argentine elite league two years later. Just promoted, Banfield was able to get the runner-up behind the Boca Juniors in 1920 . In 1921 Banfield won the Copa de Honor with a 2-1 against the Boca Juniors.

Professional club 1930s / 1940s

In 1931, some clubs decided to professionalize Argentine football. Banfield was also invited to play in the newly founded professional league, but the club officials decided against it, as it would have destroyed the sport in their opinion. A little later, almost the entire team left the club to play in the professional league. Until the founding of the association, which still exists today, in 1934, the club played in various amateur leagues. The club was then transferred back to the Segunda División. The game results got worse and worse, only a few hundred fans came to the games and finally in 1938 they were relegated to the 3rd division.

At the end of the year a group of club members managed to convince the young businessman Florencio Sola to get involved. At this point the club was about to end (excluding members and team). Since another second division had broken away from the AFA, Florencio Sola reached that Banfield could stay in League 2. He then put together a team that mainly consisted of substitute players from various first division clubs and who made it to League 1. Florencio Sola also initiated the construction of the new stadium - this is also one of the reasons why it was later named. For the year 1941 Banfield 16 points were deducted and so they only managed to stay on the last game day against Rosario Central . The class was held until 1944, but then relegated. In 1946 they returned to the first division with a record year.

In the 1947 season succeeded with the promotion team of relegation in the league. The team finished seventh in 1949 and tenth in 1950. In 1951 they were first in the table, but despite a clear lead against Racing Club they had to compete and lost 0-0 and 0-1. The following year the club was fifth.

The 1950s to 1980s

In 1954 the club descended again into the Segunda División and slowly but surely developed into an elevator team. It was not until 1962 that promotion to the Primera División could be achieved. Until 1972 the club was first class.

After a year break, the club returned to the first division in the 1973 season. But in 1978 the time had come and again you had to accept the descent. Until 1987, the club was in second class for nine years, but after the promotion there was sheer chaos in the club (among other things, the coaching team dissolved the contract with the club) and so was relegation again.

2010

The last few years

In the 1992/93 season, after very weak years in the second division, the promotion succeeded again. Banfield held up more or less well in the Primera División until 1997, as is so often the case, relegation. In the 2000/2001 season, Banfield reached the last promotion so far and has since held in the Primera División. A successful season was in the Clausura 2005 for Banfield - the club won the runner-up. Banfield was also able to play internationally several times.

In 2009 Banfield achieved the club's first championship title in the top division in the Torneo Apertura 2009 .

At the end of December 2011, Jorge da Silva signed a contract running until December 2012 as the new coach at Banfield. He succeeded Ricardo La Volpe , who finally, after an initial threat to enforce the contractually guaranteed position as head coach, agreed with the club management on an amicable termination of the contract. However, da Silva's time at Banfield was short-lived, as he resigned from his position on February 27, 2012 after he had previously been treated as Peñarol's new coach in the press . Raúl Wensel was then in charge of training for the Argentinians on an interim basis until Eduardo Acevedo took over as coach on March 9, 2012 .
