The Club Atlético Unión (better known as Unión de Santa Fe ) is an Argentine football club in Santa Fe . The club, founded in 1907, plays in the Primera División for the 2016 season .
history
The Club Atlético Unión de Santa Fe was founded in 1907 by 14 former members of the Santa Fe Football Club, which had previously been dissolved. The club originally had the English nickname United, which was quickly discarded. The names of the founding members were: Federico Achembach, Antonio Baragiola, Primo Billordo, Cayetano Bossi, Nestor A. Casabianca, José Cepeda, Guillermo Drenner, Enrique Fayó, José Fayó, Pedro Gibella, Secundino Noceda, Belisario Osuna, Guillermo Scartascini and José Trentini.
Belisario Osuna scored the first ever goal for Unión in a game against local rivals Rosario Central in 1907 . After Santa Fe was active exclusively at the local level for the first six years, it played from 1913 in the Liga Rosarina de Football , in which it was one of the strongest teams. In 1931 the Liga Santafesina de Fútbol was founded, which was then clearly dominated by Unión. Between 1931 and 1940, the team won seven of the ten championship titles in the new competition. After the club had mainly focused on football up until then, those responsible decided in 1932 to introduce a basketball department .
In the 1950s, Unión became a social and sporting institution in the city of Santa Fe and one of the most important inland, so that the club had a total of 25,000 members in 1955, while at that time only 250,000 people lived in Santa Fe. For the 1966 season, Unión rose as a second division champion for the first time in the Primera División , in which they could not avoid immediate relegation. With the second promotion within three years, Santa Fe returned with a 3-0 win on the last day of the 1968 season over CA Nueva Chicago in the Primera División. Although the team succeeded in ensuring relegation in the 1969 season, relegation followed in 1970.
Then Unión de Santa Fe became a so-called "elevator team" and commuted several times between the first and second Argentine division. The greatest success in their club's history was reaching second place in the national in the 1979 season. The champions CA River Plate were only beaten because of the away goals rule. A year earlier, the club attracted attention after being the best Argentine team of the year due to 25 consecutive games without defeat, but "only" finished third in both the National and Metropolitano .
For the last time Unión de Santa Fe rose in 2003 to the Nacional B. Due to financial and sporting difficulties in 2004 they were about to relegate to the third division, but were able to prevail in the games for relegation against the Club Social y Deportivo Tristán Suárez . In the 2008 season Unión de Santa Fe failed after third place in the season only in the promotion playoffs at Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy . A 1-1 draw in their own stadium was followed by a narrow 0-1 defeat in San Salvador de Jujuy . 2011 succeeded by a second place promotion to the Primera División.
Clásico Santafesino
The fan groups of Unión de Santa Fe and that of their city rival CA Colón, founded two years earlier (1905), have a particular rivalry . The derbies between the two teams are often overshadowed by riots, so that four derbies have already been canceled prematurely. To date, 105 derbies have been played: Unión won 37, drawn 37 games and Colón won 31.
Stadion
Unión de Santa Fe plays at the Estadio 15 de Abril , Santa Fe, which opened on April 29, 1929 and has a capacity of 27,000 spectators. It is located at the confluence of López y Planes Street and Pellegrini Boulevard.
